It's also worth pointing out that his usage percentage was virtually unchanged throughout his career. I would wager (without looking at it in depth) that the statistical differences are pace-driven more than anything.

That, in combination with his sometimes spotty-shooting (although yes, he could get red-hot and get his shot off more easily than most anyone else at PG), sort of hold him back a little bit in my eyes.

I definitely think the gap between Isiah and "the others" on those title teams was less pronounced than most lead dogs vs. their teammates.
You could even argue that Dumars became more valuable as time went on.
He was.

Okay. This board was sorely lacking of Kobe Kids, so this is very good news.

Would Dave Cowens or Lenny Wilkens be a good player to nominate at this point?

It's very difficult to argue Willis Reed over Ewing in my opinion.

Reed had a very short career, wasn't nearly the player Ewing was at their respective peaks, doesn't have the volume statistics or individual hardware of Ewing, etc...

Quite literally the only positive aspect advantage for Reed is the 1970 ring (he was very reduced during the second ring).

Reed during his first 7 years was a beast. 20 and 14.

Last 3 he averaged 11 and 8 and was injury prone.

Reed was a great player for a short time, I just don't see how he rises above Ewing, unless you heavily, heavily weigh rings in the argument.

If you look at rebounding, you have to look at the percentage of rebounds the player grabbed, not just volume.

At age 28, Reed grabbed 13.7 a game, 16 percent of all possible rebounds.

At the same age, Ewing grabbed 11.2 a game, but 16.8 percent of all possible rebounds.

Ewing was clearly the superior scorer and defensive player. They were probabaly equivalent as rebounders.

Ewing won more individual hardware. Did it longer (more volume statistics), and he did it mostly during the golden age of NBA centers.

Outside of "he won two rings/Finals MVPs (one of which was not earned)", what real arguments would Reed have in that matchup?
