Hoopshype GOAT list.
1. LeBron
2. MJ
3. KAJ
4. Magic
5. Russell.
No idea what their overall criteria are? They have Chamberlain 6th. Doesn't seem all that well thought out, but it's a list.

Re: Hoopshype GOAT list.
KAJ and Magic simply can't be that close together. The more I think about that....the more I shy away from it.
If they are that high together on the list, then they grossly underachieved from a winning perspective. 70% of the world shits on Lebron for being 4-6 while playing with nobody anywhere near a KAJ/Magic-level player, but Magic+KAJ can combine to only go 5-3 and they're both respected in the Top 4 all-time?
Something doesn't add up with that, to me.

Re: Hoopshype GOAT list.
I agree. KAJ should be ranked a fair bit higher than Magic. I see no case for Magic top 4. The rest of the top 15 is very questionable too.Robceltsfan wrote: ↑Mon Mar 24, 2025 10:57 am KAJ and Magic simply can't be that close together. The more I think about that....the more I shy away from it.

All tiers are in no particular order
Tier 1 (the only arguable GOATS)
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Lebron James
Michael Jordan
Bill Russell
Tier 2 (multi-champs with multi-MVPs but not GOATS)
Larry Bird
Tim Duncan
Magic Johnson
Stephen Curry
Wilt Chamberlain
Tier 3 (the best multi-Finals-MVPs with an MVP)
Kobe Bryant
Shaquille O'Neal
Hakeem Olajuwon
Kevin Durant
Tier 4 (the best Champs with an MVP)
Dirk Nowitzki
Nikola Jokic
Moses Malone
Giannis Antetokounmpo
Tier 5 (the best of the rest of the MVPs, Finals or otherwise)
Kevin Garnett
Charles Barkley
Oscar Robertson
Julius Erving
Karl Malone
Willis Reed
Jerry West

I essentially agree with Rob's tiers but I would move KD into tier 4 and I think Jokic has an argument for tier 3, even without multiple rings.

Re: Hoopshype GOAT list.
I'm very obviously weighting a lot on winning + "best player in the league" statuses while sprinkling in a little bit of context when players on this list had the unique advantage of being teammates.PhutureDynasty wrote: ↑Mon Mar 24, 2025 2:58 pm I essentially agree with Rob's tiers but I would move KD into tier 4 and I think Jokic has an argument for tier 3, even without multiple rings.
With one more title, Jokic could arguably make it to the top of tier 3/bottom of tier 2. Durant has hit his ATG ceiling.
I could also be convinced to move KG to tier 4.

Top 5 Not that far off imo. I am ok switching spots for Magic and Russell. Lebron will lock up #1 after the 2026 Lakers ring._Vcsgrizzfan_ wrote: ↑Mon Mar 24, 2025 10:52 am 1. LeBron

Re: Hoopshype GOAT list.
He's definitely the bottom of Tier 3....but he's definitely not below Tier 4. He's the most efficient volume scorer the game has ever seen (by a decently wide margin, IMO), and he's seen enough team success (even considering the stacked squad in GSW) to warrant top 15 all-time.Odogg wrote: ↑Mon Mar 24, 2025 3:23 pmDurant way too high.Robceltsfan wrote: ↑Mon Mar 24, 2025 2:46 pm All tiers are in no particular order

Re: Hoopshype GOAT list.
Durant is the hardest modern day player to place for me.
I've been all over the place with him and might have overrated him a little in the past.
GOAT (or very close) scorer, but I can't shake the feeling he is a "the whole is less than the sum of the parts" type player, at least in a leading role.
I said at the end of 2019 going away from GS was a risk to his legacy, and I think post-GS he hasn't really done "the narrative" any favors in his direction.
He can't drop *too* much. 30K points, GOAT-tier scorer, two Finals MVP (albeit on easy mode), two rings (same), and he has had some level of playoff success as a leading player (just no rings).
I think a little awhile ago I had him at 15 here. I think that was too liberal a rank. On RealGM a few days ago I said in the late teens or 20th spot, and I think that might be a more accurate place. He should not be above or immediately adjacent to Curry at all.
