Board golfers.
Anyone been out to play or to the range/simulator?
@Rob @Hawks @Dagger and anyone else I missed.
I am trying to get out to practice soon before I play. It's also been a while since my last round. I didn't play at all last season or the season before. Been slacking.

I was an avid (and competitive golfer) when I was much younger. Lost interest in the game over time and basically played 3-5 times a year or so for a decade or so before essentially completely giving the game up about a decade or a bit more ago. In the last dozen years, I've only ever played with one of my kids and the last time was 6-7 years ago.PhutureDynasty wrote: ↑Fri Mar 21, 2025 7:16 pm Anyone been out to play or to the range/simulator?

Long story short, my girlfriend has a twelve year old and he wanted a birthday party at a golf simulation type range. So I hit balls for the first time in eons. Meanwhile, I've lifted more and more weights, gotten bigger through the shoulders and chest but stiff as a freaking board. I could barely muster 240- 250 off the tee (including a decent amount of roll). Club head speed is probably down at least 10-12 mph.
Good thing I gave the game up. I'd hate to think how bad I'd be now playing a real golf course.

Was it hip pain to cause you to quit. It was for me. I was never good at the game. Then one summer I was working the swing shifts, I started to hit balls. Over the summer I lowered my Handicap from 22 to 16. Then I got several promotions and the game went back to hell._Vcsgrizzfan_ wrote: ↑Fri Mar 21, 2025 8:20 pmI was an avid (and competitive golfer) when I was much younger. No. I just kind of stopped enjoying playing. About fifteen years ago, I was playing in a charity scramble. Beautiful day, enjoy that format, good playing partners and I was striping it, playing really well. By the twelfth hole or so, I couldn't wait for it to end. It was kind of an epiphany. If I wasn't really enjoying myself on a perfect day and conditions, it's probably a sign I should hang up the clubs.Da Stars. wrote: ↑Fri Mar 21, 2025 8:44 pmWas it hip pain to cause you to quit. I didn't include you in the OP because I remember you mentioned you lost the passion to play._Vcsgrizzfan_ wrote: ↑Fri Mar 21, 2025 8:20 pmI was an avid (and competitive golfer) when I was much younger. That's nice that you got an idea of where you are now after having not done it in a while. Your distance isn't bad for someone your age by the way and I'd bet if you continued you'd surely get better since you still work out and are in shape.
Did your swing still felt instinctive even with the rust?
It's honestly one of the first sports I loved as a kid (because of Tiger Woods) but only as a viewer, I never played golf really until college and that was just occasionally.
Do you still enjoy watching the pros despite not playing anymore?

I’ll be playing 9 holes this Sunday after not playing all winter. I’ve never tried those simulator trainers despite my nephew who works at one always trying to get me to go. I’m old school I guess. Bucket of balls on the range, then grip & rip on the course with the boys for some good ol fashion bogey golf (if i’m lucky).

Absolutely loved it as a kid too, but because of Jack Nicklaus. Swing felt "okay" after a dozen balls or so. Huge difference was the ability to turn. I wasn't recorded, but I felt like I was barely past perpendicular when I used to effortlessly get to parallel or beyond. I could never generate big clubhead speed again. Just not supple enough.
Still love watching the pros. I appreciate just how incredibly good those guys are. Shooting 66 on 7400 yard courses with lightning fast greens and pins tucked into corners? I'm not familiar with that sport. Lol.

My last round was Chambers Bay in September. I'm itching to get back out though.

It's tough to follow every golf event but I try to watch all the majors, especially the Masters. I agree about the skill level of these players nowadays. Love him or hate him, the things that Bryson can do on the course is incredible. He's taken the analytics of a golf swing and the golf club to the absolute extreme.
I hope to be able to play golf until I am in my 70s. It's a sport that I always knew I would get into as I got older and really could afford to play often and I think I am getting to that point.

Last time I played was between Christmas and New Years. I’ll be back out soon. In fact, next Friday is like 74 and sunny on the forecast. That could be the day!

I love going golfing. It’s a great reason to meet up to kick it with the boys. Pound some beers, get feeling good, stop at a brewery for an early lunch for wings, more beers, good conversation. Get home to fulfill my husbandly duties and get in a nap in by 2pm.
The actual act of golfing doe? Eh it’s okay.

It has been over 20 years since I last played, and used to live on a golf course. Hip pain, loss of interest. Was never good to begin with. All play, no practice. But still managed to have a handicap under 18.
I played one day on men's day, drew a great partner. His first question was what is my handicap I told him 18 a fast back swing and a 12 pack of beer. I go on to shoot my best round ever. I actually broke 80. LOL. And not talking about for 9 holes. LOL>

I don’t mind it, but if I’ve got that much time to burn I’d rather be MTBiking.

Now that we've heard from the board golfers, we should hear from the stimulated ones.
