I Googled "job losses in Orlando" and the first article that comes up is this one Artie. Apparently the Orlando region is going to lose over 250,000 jobs in the hospitality sector ALONE. Disney furloughed almost 45,000 employees on April 19th. That's only two weeks without checks, but that will get ugly fast.

Don't gloat about other people's misfortunes Artie. That lack of empathy is very autistic. And karma has a way of being a bitch. Just friendly advice.

The article is from an Orlando business publication and suggests the numbers are actually higher. I went under their estimates with 250,000. They said 280,000. Of course, you know better than the local hospitality industry experts though, so there's that.

You probably do believe you know better than the Central Florida Hospitality Association president. You have just enough Dunning Kruger Syndrome to think that.

Here's the third article in that search Artie.

It states that Orlando and Las Vegas will be hardest hit in the nation. It's from the Orlando Sentinel.

And it also states that Orlando has the LOWEST median wage of the top 50 cities in America. Yikes.

I take no joy in that article from your local paper Artie. But some facts are brutal and they paint a bad picture.

1) 50th out of 50 cities in average wage.

2) More than a quarter of the full time jobs pay under $24,000/year.

3) The cost of living is the national average despite the low median wage.

4) The foreclosure rate in the 2008/09 recession was a little over 6%, 3 times higher than the national average and will be worse this time if the park closures are longer term.

Again, I take no joy in Orlando's misfortune, or anyone else's for that matter.

But the facts in that article paint an ugly picture.

How does this effect me.and what does 2008 matter? We fully recovered and then some beyond the rest of America....tourism isn't the only industry here and isn't even 50%
Who cares about the low wages for low wage type jobs?
I make good money and live well beneath my means...
This is a smart and creative city and overcomes everything.including irrelevent shit like you post thinking is relevant...
Everything will be back to normal within months...its a non factor

Believe it or not Artie. I'm glad you're unaffected. On that one, I actually believe you. And I hope it stays that way. I really do.

But Orlando is in a tough spot right now. It's undeniable, despite your attempts to deny it.

Hopefully the closures are short and it's very transitory. I really hope that's the case.

But like your local paper acknowledged in that article, Orlando has structural issues that make it particularly vulnerable, just like Vegas does.

It has no structural issues..the pandemic is the issue
The article explains the structural issues. When an economy has a significant portion tied to tourism like Vegas and Orlando, recessions have deeper effects. That was shown in 2008 in both cities where foreclosure rates dwarfed national averages.

It's because many of the jobs are relatively low paying and more prone to layoffs on average during a recession. In this case, the recession is pandemic induced and more directly linked to the pandemic than an overall economic slowdown so you are correct about that part.
