I think Jackson was a great motivator but in hindsight it's pretty apparent that his grasp of the Xs and Os was subpar.

Was it because the players just matured and got better as a team?

I think it's deeper than that. The Warriors finished first in defensive rating and second in offensive rating last year. The improvement wasn't just a minor step function. It was dramatic. They were a 'good' team by most objective criteria two years ago. They were a truly great team last year, using similar criteria.
