ElJorge wrote: Sun Jul 21, 2024 9:44 am Do you seriously consider yourself “tough”? Going to the gym doesn’t make you a hardass. Don’t you work a desk job or some shit?
I readily admit that I am not as tough as my parents and grandparents. It’s only now I am able to appreciate what they have accomplished.
You’re overthinking this just a tad. All your talk about “civil wars” and how people were tougher back in the olden days and everyone now is a pampered pussy… it very strongly comes across like you’re insecure and begging for some type of test. You don’t need to go off to battle in order to test your mettle, Ati. Sometimes just being a good father and husband is more than enough. Leave things better than you found them. I’m positive if push came to shove you’d handle yourself just fine. This perpetual chip on your shoulder is alarming.
You’re missing the point. The intangibles (sorry for using that word) are very real. I tried to tell lmd about metaphysical always intertwining with the physical and it went over his head.

Toughness is real. And I am glad you mentioned about being a good father.

My pop is now 78. There was a time when he was grumpy and beyond tolerable. No one knew why. It’s only lately he shared about some economic hardships he was experiencing and willingly did not tell anyone so as to not be a burden on them. He kept his mouth shut and put on a happy face even though we knew something was wrong under neath. I never missed an allowance or a meal. Thought everything was peachy keen.

This generation for all its talent is a victim of the softness which America has succumbed to. Lebron Durant curry are exceptional talents and athletes but mentally they do not match up with the 90’s generation and the 80’s generation. And when push comes to shove given parity or a modicum of parity. Toughness always wins out.

We saw similar in 2004 Olympics and the 2011 finals.
Please look at the last 3 minutes of yesterdays game with its stalled and hesitant offense and try to tell me that leadership and intangibles are not real and that psychology is a fraudulent field

Yea I mean that’s fine and all… I think modern athletes have their own pressures they’re dealing with IMO. The amount of scrutiny they’re under today compared to the 90s is next level… every social media user is apparently an expert and has something to say. Mistakes are blown out of proportion and overanalyzed. I think today’s generation deals with plenty.

Cool story about your dad. IMO that’s the way it should be. Quiet stoicism in the face of hardships. I try not to ever involve my kids in any of my drama, and I’ll vent to my wife here and there but usually I’ll just deal with whatever I’m going through in private. Or ya know… I’ll make a post here crying about it

I treasured those sticks. Applied the hockey tape with joy and love. Sawed off the tops to get the length just right.

My dad took care of an outdoor rink very close to our house. Where I grew up, winters were freezing (make Minnesota look balmy) and shinny hockey on the outdoor rink was absolute heaven.

It snows here in Idaho during the winter and it absolutely kicks my ass sideways. I can only imagine Canadian winters. No thank you.

Stupid: go read a history book. I don’t need to feed you every vital fact and concept.
Go read the famous battles where valor one the day against a superior army when each was on a level playing field.
Basketball is simulated warfare, hence it’s not merely about skill and athleticism. The intrinsic plays a vital role this is why sports psychologist make money.
But that is over your head. “Bigger better faster”
I'm glad you aren't so stupid that you didn't recognize that I was indeed talking to you.

You're full of shit Attie. You are not a tough guy. You're a wannabee. I'd gladly match toughness resumes with you.

My dad was born in 1912 and lived through the depression praying whenever there was a storm that the barn wouldn't get struck by lightning because they couldn't afford insurance. He had a tough life. He came from a family of 12 and my mom from a family of 14. I was raised in an 1150 square foot bungalo with 3 siblings. We always had food, but no luxuries. Christmas presents were socks, underwear and maybe a shirt or pair of pants. My dad would occasionally lose his mind and buy me something for hockey that wasn't used and I thought I was the luckiest kid on earth.

I lost my dad in 3rd year university. I wasn't given a freaking thing. I started work at 15 (did paper routes and caddying for golf before that) as a nighttime tv cameraman. I did 7 consecutive years of university (2 undergraduate, then law school and finally an MBA) without any help financially. I worked at a mine in the summers and saved every nickel to pay for it. I worked 12 hour shifts and took every overtime shift I could get. I'd leave on the fall for school down south with 9-10k in my jeans. Back then (late 70s to early mid 80s), it was enough to pay for my tuition, books and live. I lived in some dumps, but I got by just fine.

I've gotten breaks and been lucky along the way. Anyone who's successful who pretends they weren't lucky is a liar or delusional.

Wannabe tough guys like you turn my stomach. You were advantaged from the get go. You're stupid, and while you've achieved modest successes, you believe it's because of innate qualities. Dude, born under different circumstances, you could be homeless.

You are all bark and full of self righteous shit.

You couldn't get a real woman on your own, so you married a subservient Latina who still regulates when and how often you get sex. Maybe that's why you're such a repressed, self righteous dick.

That Attie, is unvarnished truth.

Edit: for the record, I know damn well I'm not tough. I'm physically extremely fit for my age, but if there is WW3, I'm fucked. I've forgotten all the survival skills I had as a boy. I'd perish quickly. But pretend tough guys just really turn my stomach.
Enough from you. You will not be responded to after this.
Truth is a bitch, isn't it Attie?

I'm from a small mining town in northern Ontario. Closer to Hudson's Bay than Toronto. There were stretches that could last 2-3 weeks where the nighttime lows would be -45° or colder and the daytime highs might get to -10°.

I didn't know any better so I didn't mind it.

-45 is ridiculous. We laugh nervously when it gets to 15 degrees.

I resent that remark. I was thinking MN winters pretty fucking cold. :suds:

I always crack up when I hear Californians saying ‘OMG, it’s soooooo cold!’
In my head I’m thinking ‘STFU, we don’t even know what cold is!’

People confuse "lack of technology" with "toughness" all the time. Ditto with "holds dumbass political/social opinions".

Boomers and their bootlickers, especially.

Toughness takes many forms on many fronts, and pretending there isn't meaningful amounts of overlap amongst the generations is silly.

Within basketball, "tougher" simply means "not nearly as good/skilled and it makes me uncomfortable, so let me default to something that is much more nebulous to balance my ego in a positive direction...they might be skilled, but they aren't bad ass tough like us!"

A skinny, pale white, 9-5 cubicle working, nu-male from New York City preaching about toughness is somewhat comical.

People in here writing family history novels.

It’s a four generation cycle that repeats. We all have to live in the time we’re born into and do the best we can with the circumstances.

My other grandfather was born in Michigan and grew a small restaurant chain empire that started out as selling homemade soda on street corners as a teenager. He fed the construction workers at many critical projects in New York City in the 60s and 70s.

He was the biggest Trumpster I'll ever know, he loved Trump ever since he saved the wollman rink in Manhattan.
