the question is: by how much and will they even contend for playoff berth?

Frankly I don't care about making the playoffs next season if we play mutiple blue chip age-22 and under talents showing star promise.

They will definitely improve by virtue of getting older and learning/maturing, and also via not having Kobe's stifling on and off the court presence around.

They have some assets (mostly the top 3 protected pick) and a massive amount of cap space and the Lakers' cachet.

Derozan & Whiteside are going to command lots of money, but not Durant type money. Seems like Pat Riley's one of the few guys persuasive enough to get stars to team up & sign for less. Unfortunately, he works on the other coast. Not sure if the Buss family has anyone with that influence, considering they blew their chance at LMA last summer.
