Fellow Lakers fans.... would you be fine if we get no elite free agents this offseason?

Post by LNS »

The more I think about it, the more I find myself leaning towards this. Now, don't misunderstand me, if someone like Durant wanted to sign up here, then I'd be all for it. But IF we end up drafting Simmons or Ingram, and we have budding star D'Angelo (plus very serviceable players in Randle and Clarkson), then wouldn't adding a ball dominant established player like Durant or Westbrook stunt their growth a bit?

The way I see it is, the Warriors look pretty unstoppable for the next 2-3 seasons at least, right? And by then D'Angelo, Clarkson, Randle, Simmons/Ingram will be fully established as players and hopefully ready to takeover. Now, of course that means another 2-4 years at least of growing pains, but at this rate who the hell cares?

Does anyone really think adding Durant and maybe DeRozan will get us by the Warriors or even the Spurs? And let's say Curry blows his knee out or something and we actually make the Finals, do you see us beating Cleveland?

Believe me, I'm not throwing in the towel here, I just think we should be patient here. I mean regardless of what I think, Jim is gonna go gun's blazing after Durant, DeRozan, probably Whiteside and any other solid free agent, and he'll probably sign someone. But IMO it's almost a waste of money and will kinda slow down the development of our young core a bit.

Thoughts?

The Lakers do have a current nucleus of young talent
But there is little doubt that adding a star who can either dominate offensively or be a real defensive stopper would be a huge asset

And there is no assurance that the current crop will improve dramatically enough to make them a contender in the tough West

Not a Lakers fan, but as a general comment, you want to lose the 'losing' culture ASAP. You don't want those young guys getting used to losing early in their careers.

I have no great expectations of a FA. Based on what happened to most of them this year and last, Lakers dodged a few bullets. A trade for a player is more likely.
I heard Lillard on Dan Patrick today talking about how LA was his favorite city, then he talked about how pissed he was over his AS snubs the last two years. I'd rather have him, although thats pie in the sky.
I could see Pau coming back. He'd actual fit real well.

Same here. Although I wouldn't want Gasol back, TBH. The thing is, while someone like Durant would be a huge boost to our win/loss column, who the hell cares if it just results in early exit after early exit?

But again, I wouldn't be turning down KD if he wanted to sign here, because I'll admit that it'd open the flood gates for other free agents to say "I wanna go play with Kevin in LA".

nice deflection
and if you think the current Lakers team could make the playoffs next year without the addition of some additional talent-you know shit about basketball

1. I didn't mention making the playoffs without "additional talent", you weird little aspy.
2. How the fuck did I deflect? Do you even know what deflecting is?

After Durant, probably the next best unrestricted FA this summer is Al Horford, or maybe 44 year old Dwyane Wade. 2017 yields a better crop of upper-tier talent.

1) who said you mentioned the playoffs? BUT I DID, you GOOFBALL
2) look up deflection and get back to us (when you try to do everything but answer a question or change the topic or conversation-you are deflecting--(something you're an expert at)

it would appear from this thread that you might be suffering from a disease far worse than Aspergers

Adding Durant instantly makes us a better team, but I'm with you on the possibility of stunting the growth of our young core. It'd take some clever coaching, some buying in from all parties to their respective roles, and a unique cohesive blend of supporting veterans to get us back to the Finals. Durant and D'angelo could work assuming the OKC blueprint could be adopted by Russell, which I'm sure he wouldn't have a problem with. Them throwing max money at Derozan doe, would be a huge mistake. I like the idea of planting premium level seeds, and watching them grow into the greatness they were genetically destined for without the mudding of free agent instant quick fix contaminants (unless it's Durant).

Put it this way, fellas: are the Lakers a Kevin Durant away from making the Finals? Probably not. He can't get by SA or GS, and he has friggin' Westbrook on his team. For crying out loud people! lol
