Pawn America.

Post by AbeVigodaLive »

I went to the pawn shop for the first time this weekend.

What a terrible place. But I left confused. Everything seemed so expensive. TVs ran from $600 to $1500. WHAT? For a used tv? You can buy a new one cheaper. But it wasn't just the tvs.

This is the drill I own:

Image

Looks like it can be purchased NEW for $69.99 - $79.99. It was at the pawn shop for $89.99. What?

1. Are there negotiations with every sale? Is that part of the deal?
2. Are the usual customers simply not savvy (smart) enough to know about good deals... or money in general?
3. Do people simply swap (barter) other items so they end up paying less than the asking price and trick themselves into thinking they're getting a good deal (a bit of #1 and #2)?

Considering they probably bought that drill from drug addict that recently stole it for $10, you would think they could sell it for cheaper.

Whenever I watch Storage Wars, I'm amazed at what those guys say they can sell people's used junk for. See this cracked up, broken wicker chair, I'll get $70 for it no problem.

First off, if you are going to own a drill get a Dewalt or a fancy Milwaukee or something. :D However i do own a lot of craftsman tools just not the power tools.

Meh. My old man's theory was to purchase middle-of-the-road on most stuff. It's a drill for pretty basic household items. I didn't think I'd need to pay 3x the price to drill a 1/4" hole in the wall to hang a shelf.

I'm not willing to pay above 34% though.

For some reason I was impressed with people who could eyeball something and immediately come up with a reasonable value, no matter what the object (it seemed).

Nearly as impressed with those folks in a specific field who could examine a piece of "junk" in their field and immediately come up with its value.

Of course, not knowing much it's possible they are guessing more than I think they are, but still...
Taking a break from the board. Please reference my last post for more details if you are interested.

I'm impressed with all the cordless Ryobi sets.

Maybe tjat pawn shop is terrible, I've gotten really good deals on things there before. Dvds are usually .50 or 1.00, and I have bought some jewelery there before for next to nothing.

I mentioned my experience to a buddy at hoops yesterday. He said pawn shops can be good for DVDs and games. But you don't always know if they're going to work.

[Note: Most of the DVDs and games seemed to be about $5. Don't know how good this store is. It seems a bit more "corporate" than what I thought a pawn shop would be. Just looked, there are 25+ franchises in the upper midwest.]

At the pawn shop you pay for experience...
Experienced tv or drill...nobody wants an untested drill
