Black comic book writer melts down over Entertainment Weekly treatment of Black Panther

Post by kobeunderbite »

As an African-American male, I found Entertainment Weekly's Captain America: Civil War cover disappointing. The fandom has very few African-American superheroes. Period. It's disappointing to see Black Panther singled out as the only hero that's trivialized on a cover that also features Iron Man and Captain America. Don't get me wrong, I get that it was an attempt at humor but it was poorly executed. The 'meow' makes Black Panther look meek, as if he doesn't belong there standing next to two of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Being lumped with the 'Real Housewives' reality series isn't doing BP any favors either.

This is the first African-American superhero in mainstream comics. A prince/king of an African nation. Does he not deserve a little more respect? A big draw of superhero comics is the opportunity to read the material and see shining examples of heroism and the pinnacle of what we all should aspire to accomplish and overcome. In his big cover debut there's nothing inspirational or enriching by this 'unintentional' misrepresentation of one of the smartest, resilient and powerful figures in Marvel Comics.

Do better, Entertainment Weekly.

There is a lot of outrage on Twitter as well, I don't really understand it.

I have a hard time believing that people could actually think that "meow" being on the cover of this magazine that almost no one will read will permanently label Panther as a joke in the eyes of the movie goers. Even if it did influence a few people they would almost definitely change their opinions when they see the film(s) and T'Challa is inevitably accurately and respectfully depicted, as every other hero has been.

Just speaks to the hyper sensitivity and insecurity that exists today. Marvel has been extremely mindful to depict minorities and women respectfully, I guess so mindful that the vultures have to look elsewhere and attack the media for daring to not treat this fictional comic book superhero with the utmost respect.

This type of stuff really is important to you, wow. You probably lost your food when one black stormtrooper was added to the star wars franchise/movie.
Well at least we have John Stewart.

How outraged were you at this treatment of Panther?

You are right though, you'll always have the third string Lantern.

The world is changing right in front of our eyes and it's becoming apparent as to who is the one who takes this stuff to heart. Most superheroes have been white and that is just one aspect of life.

People are starting to come out about this and rightfully so in a "diverse nation". Look at what happened when one black president was elected and the actual outcry, I mean some were really crying.
Add this to the furor over a single black stormtrooper and you get where I'm coming from.

Step or get stepped on.

Most superheroes have been white because black people have never created a successful superhero. If you want a black superhero, create your own, don't steal ours.

The only time a studio turned a mainstream superhero black it was in what became the worst superhero movie of all-time, literally the lowest critical reception/rating, so that won't be happening again.

I still say we have Neo from the Matrix but they stole the story from a black woman and made him white but the storyline suggest black.

Kinda like superman getting to fly from an egyptian ritual performed by Lois lane. How about the portrayal of eygptians, moses, jesus, etc. in movies? If anything they are black.

So it seems that this is important to those who run hollywood and it's not black people. It's understandable but times are changing, can you handle the change?

You can think that the Matrix was written by some black all you'd like. Meanwhile that same whore did not show up to court, her attorney submitted no evidence, and she lost her suit emphatically and was ordered to pay the defendants legal fees which totalled over $300,000.

Times aren't changing all that much. Most Americans are actually sick of political correctness and pandering to minorities, which is why Spider-Man will again properly be WHITE, not BLACK.

All of these mainstream superheroes will remain white because white heroes make more money, people aren't interested in seeing the B version.

And this helps insecure guys like you have some self esteem. I know what it's all about. I can't help if I'm the better man.

Peeps like you were probably the same type that felt a certain type of way when black people were allowed into sports,

He thinks the Matrix was written by a black crack whore who sued the actual writers, lost her case because she submitted no evidence and didn't show up to court and had to pay the real writers 300k legal fees.

The first player that they allowed wasn't the best from black people either and yet won the ROY and the MVP 2 years later.
No wonder.

For your sake they should. I wouldn't want to know what happens to you if they did make Spidey black. You took a long hiatus right around the time that a black stormtrooper was announced in starwars. hmmm

The character in Star Wars is an original character, not comparable to the Spider-Man situation you fool.
