Underpaid relative to their market value/peers, not to today's players.

The same was true even more so for Scottie Pippen, who in 1991 was the 5th (?) highest paid player on the Bulls.

come on dude...that is because they were locked into a contracts. If all the players were to sign at the same time...there is no doubt MJ would be the top paid player on the Bulls roster.

I'm not sure what your point is, especially in MJ's case. Teams can easily generate a new contract if they want.

Anyway, consider...

At the height of the Jordan craze, Jordan made about 3.3 million. The average salary at the time was 1.1 million. So Jordan made 3x the average salary.

That ratio translates to about 15 million circa 2014.

How many of the guys making more than 15 million circa 2014 are even in Jordan's dimension, even taking into account things like tenure (Kobe)?

And that's just on the court stuff. In terms of generating revenue for the Bulls and NBA at-large, no one in history has come close to matching him.

why the hell would the Bulls want to generate a new contract for jordan? :L

News flash...teams generally paid players certain amount cause they have to...not because they want to.

MJ's $33M deal kind of like a going away present, much like what Kobe got these last couple seasons. I always thought KG started that massive salary boom, $126 over 6 years with Minny in '99. KG made $28M his MVP season of 2004.

Yeah, except MJ brought Chicago a couple of rings those 2 seasons.......and Kobe......well......not so much.

Teams generated new contracts for players all the time.

If a player has a production boom that grossly outpaces his salary, it's not uncommon to renegotiate and for a new contract to be formed as a matter of appreciation and goodwill.

Especially early in his career, do you *really* think if Jordan had pushed the issue, that he wouldn't have gotten a significant bump in salary? But he never really did push the issue, except at the end a bit.

Like I said, that was probably mostly a function of such a small part of his fortune being driven by his salary. But he was definitely underpaid in that sense until his last contract.

Bernie Williams has more playoff hits than anyone not named Jeter.

Translation: volume stats are just noise

Kobe has 18 more playoff assists than Jordan....in 41 more games.

it bothers you that he is superior to Jordan AND Dennis Johnson doesn't it.
C'mon Rob, you love stats. You even used PER.

PER isn't a volume stat.

We always hear about the old dudes being bitter about the new era of NBA players.

Maybe contracts/money have a lot to do with it.

After all, Juwon Howard and Antoine Walker are rich dudes... and could probably buy and sell a guy like Sidney Moncrief even though neither was nearly as good of a player.
