KoME: the most selfish, ME-first athlete in team sports

Post by bELIever10 »

history.

Cared about one thing only and that's jacking up his contested jump shots, at all costs. Didn't give a damn about his teammates, never did.

That's what I will always remember him as.

Good riddance to that cancerous overrated chucker.

good riddance. Kobe will join an amateur league, chuck up shots and throw his team mates under the bus.

I don't know how else to describe his play this season other than selfish.

Just noticed he went 4 - 20 fg yesterday. What the fuck...

Give the young guys a chance to improve.

He's killing the team in multiple ways now.

- Financially
- Productively
- Developmentally

Which is why IMO, Kobe is the greatest basketball player to ever play. Most players with above average individual talent who if they played half as selfishly as Kobe, would've played themselves right out of the league. Kobe despite playing a style that would normally cripple any team who's success relied on cohesion, found a way to do the shit on his terms, his way, en route to one of the 10 greatest careers in NBA history. While some players bitched themselves to a system, Kobe became the system. IMHGDO, the best there ever was.

House unsurprisingly nailed it but I would add, how much more successful would Kobe have been had he played the way his critics had wanted him to?

In other words, as House covered, he had a top-10 career (objectively) despite being (allegedly) the most cancerous, ball-hogging chucker in the history of the league. How much higher on the list would he be if his basketball IQ was above-freezing and had he been a selfless player? Would he have won 10 rings?

Kobe must be the most successful underachiever ever.

I'd say 7 or 8. He could have kept the best center in the league around and continued to be a #2 role player and win more rings.

But Kobe ain't about all that.

No one should be about all that, I personally would much rather the additional $50+ million and glory that comes with being the man and never taking a paycut.

But that's what seperates the alphas from the betas. And lastly, Shaquille would not have been "the man" on the team past 2004, which renders most of your point moot, although there would have been more rings potentially.

So Kobe was dumb enough to stain his reputation for some extra money?

And here we go with the alpha/beta talk. Wilt was an alpha for a long time.......and he gets knocked on here often for his lack of a winning reputation. Kobe went all mega-alpha for a 3-year stretch and led his Lakers to a middle-of-the-pack type resume during that time. Then he whined and bitched for better teammates....and then the winning started up again.

Shaq was no less efficient post 03-04 than he was prior. He simply put HIS NEEDS on the back burner in an effort to win more rings past his prime. That didn't completely work out for him, but at least he tried.

You call it dumb to bank $50m+ more than he would have and have gained additional prestige and self satisfaction for being 'the man'. I don't. You're entitled to your opinion no matter how stupid.

There's no argument to be made for Shaq being the lead dog unless you believe that 2005-2007 Wade was so much better than Kobe that Shaq would have had to lead him where he didn't lead Wade, in which case you're a moron.

Where does the additional $50M come from?

Was it set that he would have to take a paycut to stay with Shaq?
