Never understood the Kurt Cobain /Nirvana hoopla

I started watching some Netflix conspiracy documentary(?) at work the other day. While it was interesting, I just don't see Nirvana as some game changing band. There were others around at the time that were better.

Alice in Chains smoked Nirvana. If they were pop then ok, you have a point. They weren't though, so stfu about an era of music that you have no clue about. Dirt is one of the best lp's ever.

Facelift started it and it only got better from there. Educate yourself and watch the AIC Music Bank dvd.

That said, I remeber the first time I did hear nirvina. It was like in the fall of 1991 and I was listening to wprk 91.5 Rollins college underground radio when "Smells Like Teen Spirit" came on and right then I knew that this song was going to eventually cross over and be huge...
there was really nothing like it out there at all....
sure enough, not even 2 months later it was being played everywhere, then other songs from the album started popping up and we're also really good and different from anything else out there..that's what made them as big as they were...they were just the first to break through I guess

Nirvana never made it into the movie "Singles" though, while the Smashing Pumpkins, AIC and many others did, even Citizen Dick made it into that movie

I feel the similar about AinC.

Grohl's arrival definitely helped Nirvana take off. He was something like their 4th or 5th drummer by then and they already had a studio album out with a prior drummer.

I always thought Smells Like Teen Spirit was an overrated song to be honest.

I haven't listened to enough of Nirvana's other songs to have a true opinion on them as a whole though.

We saw FFs with Cage the Elephant. Cage's drummer was sick. They had a roadie playing drums and were meh. Halfway through Grohl came out and played.
They instantly became AMAZING.

Great musically and melodic throughout, overall more talented band than nirvana and far better music and depth.
Just play "pisces iscariot" start to finish while doing nothing and you will better understand...
also, Nirvana has no song on the level of "Mayonnaise"
