He simply wasn't. He was a "good" player on average who had a handful of great moments (lots of which were in the playoffs).
But you are what you repeatedly do, and Reggie's baseline was squarely in the "good, but not a superstar" camp.
We're on player #41 on this list and it doesn't include anyone prior to 1976. I think we're a little bit outside of the "great player" category. We don't even have any MVPs left to choose from other than D-Rose, who won't make this list. No lead dog champions remain. We're at the stage where it's either "really good lead dogs that didn't win titles", or "really good role players that helped win titles".
Reggie fits one of those descriptions.

Miller is a fine pick here for sure.
I actually agree with some of what he said....but I don't think those Indy team's were ever really equipped to win a title.....MJ's Bulls or not. In fact, the Bulls only eliminated them from the playoffs once that decade...in 1998 in the ECF's. They lost to Ewing's Knicks 3 times (93, 94, 99). The old Celtics twice (91 & 92). The Pistons once (90). Shaq's Magic once (95). And the Hawks in '96 (though Miller was injured that series).
They were the Jazz of the Eastern Conference. Always pretty good. Never quite good enough. And Miller was the best player on that franchise for that period of time.
This is as good a time as any for Reggie to get in....but Ray is a good option too. I'm not as sold on Tony Parker.

Billups has a Finals MVP and more All-NBA accolades than Worthy.

Well Billups best 2 players were Rip Hamilton and Ben Wallace. That's not QUITE as good as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson.
Close! But not quite the same.
I'm sure if Billups had older Shaq and prime Kobe as teammates that he'd have fared a bit better in the rings category.

Miller in and of himself was never a top 10 in the MVP vote, and was only top 15 once.
He also made 0.000 first or second all-nbas, and only 3 third teams.
Only five all-star games.
That is a fine career, but it's not mindbendingly good. As an individual (to say nothing of team success), that is basically a textbook case of being "merely good".

Taking a break from the board. Please reference my last post for more details if you are interested.

One thing of note. Many of us were fawning over Curry's shooting yesterday and his career 60.2 TS%. Miller, over 18 seasons, amassed a TS% of 61.4%. Five years into his career, like Curry, he had a TS% of 62.8%.Bush4Ever wrote:Miller in and of himself was never a top 10 in the MVP vote, and was only top 15 once.

It is, largely because such a high percentage of his FG attempts were threes, plus being an all-time great FT shooter obviously.Robceltsfan wrote: One thing of note. It *is* somewhat different doing it on 13-14 shot attempts per game as opposed to 17-18 or so (and probably with a greater degree of difficulty on average) though. That's the thing that's amazing about Curry....keeping a very healthy, near-elite scoring pace while shooting absurdly well, while facing serious defensive attention. Miller had all those things as well, just a half-level below.

I don't disagree....Curry is a level above no doubt (probably 2 or 3 levels), I just had no idea Reggie was that efficient from the field. It's a shame that he didn't do much else on the offensive end. He would have been PERFECT as a #2 player with either a great slasher or a great center. I think he could have had massive success in that role.

He could have. He was a heck of a player with what tools he did have but traditionally, that doesn't make for a true #1 option. That is something that I have heavily taken into account since discovering a year ago just how analytically successful Reggie was.Robceltsfan wrote:Bush4Ever wrote:It is, largely because such a high percentage of his FG attempts were threes, plus being an all-time great FT shooter obviously.Robceltsfan wrote: One thing of note. Reggie would have been higher if he didn't need screens to create shots all the time. I prefer a guy who can create on his own.

Curry...Allen...they all work off of screens the majority of the time they have the ball. The hell are you talking about?

Reggie actually could create his own shot. The screens just made it much more difficult to guard him, so that's what he did to maximize his production in those circumstances.King Deez wrote:Reggie would have been higher if he didn't need screens to create shots all the time. I will go with Reggie. Much better playoff performer overall than Ray, both had a long stretch of strong regular seasons. Ray's rings don't swing it for me given they were either as 3rd dog or bench player.
