I think I comfortably convinced myself in last rounds' nomination process that Dennis Rodman is worthy of selection.
2-time DPOY
9-time All-Defense selection
2-time All-NBA selection
7-time rebounding champion
5-time NBA champion
He's arguably the most decorated player left on the board....and is also arguably the greatest rebounder of all-time (all paces being equal).

Rodman averaged 26 points a game in college on 64 percent shooting.
[Note: Then again, lots of rebounds, so maybe he got a lot of points off of offensive rebounds, and athleticism-based stuff]

He averaged 12 ppg in only 26 minutes for a team that screwed out of an NBA championship in Game 7.

For me, I am going back and forth between Rodman, Miller and Allen.
Dennis Rodman had a hell of a career. However, he was not the type of player who you could build a good team around. He was clearly a good secondary option That was able to contribute greatly in favorable circumstances.
Reggie Miller wasn't flashy And he doesn't have the rings. However, as unconventional as it was, he was a legit #1 guy who simply fell victim to better players and teams.
Ray Allen was a better player than Reggie Miller but didn't have the team success as a #1 that Miller had. However, he did end up playing big roles on 2 championship teams, which Miller didn't.

Well...it's 5 votes for Rodman so far...so it might be moot anyways.
I'd like to make a push for Reggie, but that wasn't received very well the last time I brought it up.

This really shouldn't be a debate between Rodman, Reggie, and Allen.
Miller & Allen: 0 DPOYs, 0 defensive teams, 2 combined rings, 5x leading a major stat category (Reggie, FT%)
Rodman: 2 DPOYs, 8 defensive teams, 5 rings, 7x rebounding champ.
Rodman belongs here, with DJ next before Allen & Reggie.

But again, you can't build a successful team around Dennis Rodman, a guy with limited scoring ability. That can't go ignored just because Dennis flourished in other areas for teams that only needed him to be a role player.Havlicekstealsit wrote:This really shouldn't be a debate between Rodman, Reggie, and Allen.

I don't believe you could really build great teams around those other guys either. Good teams - maybe but so what at the end of the day?y2ktors wrote:But again, you can't build a successful team around Dennis Rodman, a guy with limited scoring ability. I'd rather have the great role player who can adapt his game to different leading players.

Agreed.
For the most part, everyone we're speaking of at this point is incapable of being "the man" on a title contending team. We're in the "magnificent role player" phase of our contest. And of all the players left, I can't think of one the did things in "their role" as well as Dennis Rodman did.

But Reggie Miller, in the Bird years, was the man on championship contending teams. They just happened to not win the championship.Robceltsfan wrote:vcsgrizzfan wrote:I don't believe you could really build great teams around those other guys either. I guess basically what I believe is that Reggie and Ray, given roles as only secondary players, were capable of having greater career accomplishments.

The 2000 Pacers were much more of a "by committee" effort than most title-contending teams. It's arguable Reggie wasn't even the best player on the team. At a minimum, the distinction between Reggie and "the others" wasn't as clear and sharp as it is for most title teams.y2ktors wrote:

I also think lots of times player A would clearly be a superior performer to player B in a leading role but actually be clearly worse in a role player/secondary role.
I think that might be the case here with Miller vs. Rodman. From my perspective, there is no chance those Bulls teams would have been better off swapping Rodman for Miller, and probably not the Spurs teams either. The Pistons maybe so...but Rodman wasn't even fully developed at that point.
