Maybe I should phrase my position differently. I don't think people who are gay have any control over their sexual orientation, anymore than as a heterosexual I had control over my sexual orientation. Whether born that way or by mental illness, they have no control over that orientation.

There's no way to prove this as there aren't any reliable stats to go off from the past, but I'd bet my left nut that as the social acceptability of homosexuality has increased, so to has the propensity for Americans to identify as homosexual. Again, I can neither prove that, nor could someone refute it.

More people come out of the closet now because it's more acceptable. There's still the same percentage of gay people. I have no idea if homosexuality is hereditary, but if it is, then homosexual acceptance could reduce the homosexual population over time as gay men will marry gay men and adopt if they want kids instead of living a fake straight life and having kids with a woman as they have in the past.
