Based on minutes played he was 6th, 5th and 2nd those 3 years. In the '86 playoffs he averaged 25/9 and 26/9 and 2.5 BPG during the Finals on 57%.

That ring and contribution is more valuable than any Finals performance by anyone else on the current list of candidates.
John Stockton was a leader on his teams yearly, McHale not so much. Might as well vote Horry over him based on your context.

Yeah, Horry averaged 25/9 during a playoff run for a title team. Good call buddy.

Stockton made the playoffs 19 straight years. Make your pick wisely.
That doesn't factor into my rankings.

That's silly, he never averaged 25 & 9 during his 7 titles.

Are we choosing guys for their collective careers... Or by picking and choosing Finals performances?

Not shit no, did he ever average a double double for an entire season even? I know Stockton did 10 straight years. 13/13 is nice but 19/19 is even better.

No....never averaged a double-double. He sacrificed minutes in the name of winning and he sacrificed rebounds to other great rebounders (Parish and Bird).

Stockton, meanwhile, played his entire career with the #2 scorer in NBA history and has 0 rings to show for it.

Ok, so no and he had other players who were more of leaders than him then too? He wasn't a lead dog on any of those teams. Stockton didn't win but he averaged a double 10 years straight, made the playoffs 19/19 years in the league while being a #2 player on a team and making the finals 2 times. I can't give a guy who was maybe a 3rd best on a team the benefit of a doubt when we couldn't hardly give a #2 guy Scottie the benefit of the doubt earlier.

Ewing

and nominate Finals MVP James Worthy.

Stockton was also a 10 time all-star. Remember he was 19/19 on the Utah Jazz, this isn't a great franchise like the Celtics were.

Make no mistake, McHale was BY FAR the #2 option for the majority of his career. He also finished 4th in the MVP vote one season. Stockton never finished higher than 7th.

McHale is a 7-time all-star....and the Jazz went to to the WC Semis the year BEFORE Stockton got there.

Tough call. To this day, McHale has the best set of low post scoring moves I have ever witnessed. He was a magician in the post. He was an excellent scorer and a very underrated overall player. The context of comparing him to Horry, albeit probably facetiously is beyond stupid. He had some very magical playoff moments.

It really comes down to a few things. The total body of work, primarily regular season, obviously favors Stockton. Historically significant playoff performances favor McHale. How much do you value each of those in how you assess players?

I tend to err towards overvaluing playoff performances and undervaluing regular season numbers but I get both cases.

I'll mull this over a while longer.

and continued to for another 19 straight years, how many players have led a team to 19 consecutive playoffs?

To be fair, him and Malone also had a shit load of first round exits and lost to suspect teams in the playoffs pretty regularly.

The latter is not equivalent to what Deez is saying though.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar missed the playoffs in consecutive years in his prime. Wilt Chamberlain, Hakeem Olajuwon, Charles Barkley and KG all missed the playoffs in their respective primes. It doesn't lessen their overall impact on the game and the individual impact that they had on their team's success. It just means that it wasn't enough to overcome better overall teams or unfavorable circumstances.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was even named league MVP and missed the playoffs. I'm quite sure that he was more impactful that year than Stockton in those last 3-4 years in Utah.
