How much would you spend without telling SO beforehand?

Post by Buckets »

Had to take a per-marriage session as part of getting married in a catholic church. I thought they asked some pretty good questions, one of which was, how much would you spend at once without telling your significant other beforehand?

Me and the future spouse were pretty close, I said $500 she said $300. However another couple had one say $1,000 and the other say $100 which I think was kinda funny.

Any big spenders out there that hide big purchases from their spouse?

Kind of funny. I honestly wouldn't spend more than $50 without telling my wife ahead of time. She does all of our budgeting so I'd feel weird spending money on myself without talking to her first.

Thats pretty good. There's not many items I would drop big money on so I guess my estimate of $500 would come down in reality. Plus I plan on big purchase beforehand so odds are I would end up saying something prior to buying.

It always makes my wife and I laugh when we see the Christmas Lexus commercials where the young wife goes out and buys a new $45,000 car for her spouse. As if any real husband would be happy their wife went out and spent that much money without telling him first.

Most of our money is shared, but we each have an individual account to do with what we please (for individual purposes).

For example, all of my gambling money is drawn from my personal account.

LMAO at betas who don't have a personal account and have to ask permission to buy shit

LOL
Taking a break from the board. Please reference my last post for more details if you are interested.

She doesn't spend money. Ever. I have to force her to buy things sometimes.

None or it's the back hand for them all. What are they doing out of the basement anyways?

Our limit would be about $100. It's not that we can't afford to make the occasional $300-$500 purchase, it's simply the respect involved with spending our family's money.

This spending limit goes out the window for gifts for each other or the kids.
Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are dumber than that.

I think you see that more with moms. I assume she has much less reluctance when spending on the kids?

Still the same. I think the only thing she really is comfortable spending money on is groceries. She is all about what is practical. I've had to tell her that we don't buy practical gifts for birthdays or Christmas. She's starting to get it a little. Since I got my promotion, she has calmed down a bunch.

We're a one income family and that makes buy extravagant gifts few and in between.

I think you see that more with GOOD moms. I assume she has much less reluctance when spending on the kids?
Fixed it for you. Good moms (parents in general) are not self-centered and put family first before themselves. Plenty of other parents out there who give their kids the shaft and spend on themselves before others.

What's the fun in that? My wife and I don't really even buy each other presents for Christmas anymore. It's more fun to watch our kids enjoy it.

It helps to have an account she doesn't know about.

I remember taking a marriage prep class at BYU. The teacher was an older man who was telling us about how finance is one of the top reasons for divorce in our country which is true. He then went on to say that he solved his finance issues by giving his wife an allowance each month that she was allowed to spend on certain things.

So his advice on how to properly address financial issues in marriage is to treat your spouse like a 9 year old.

I don't know if I'd be comfortable with sharing money with Abe.

Some spouses need that discipline. Otherwise you're coming home to new furniture and she's bitching about adding more closet space for shoes.
