Like I said, it's pretty obvious both you and Deez are speaking from a place of ignorance. It's not a big deal, but you are both very wrong about this.
Crane Kick anyone?

Jump front kick is the more common name (although with a front kick you don't stand on one leg like a dumbass for 10 seconds beforehand---and the two are not exactly the same anyway), but yes there are some legit things sprinkled into the movie. But if you notice all the legit things in the move *all* carry the same "mystic" quality.
Do you think Daniel would win in the climax of the movie with a simple and more common (and more practically executed) move? Or with the "arcane magicical, unbeatable move taught by the wise old Asian from "throughtout the ages" ?
*Real* fighters spend a majority of their time on moves, combos, and aspects of fighting that are more consistently and easily applied. In real life Danielsan gets into the crane position on one leg, gets single-legged into a takedown, where he gets his skull caved in from ground and pound.

Bush, what are your thoughts on Ong Bak?
"The idea is not to block every shot. The idea is to make your opponent believe you might block every shot."

Have to confess I haven't seen it.AlaskaHawks wrote:Bush, what are your thoughts on Ong Bak?
In general though, representing martial arts in an authentic manner is fairly at odds with making an entertaining movie and making money.
And that's fine. But ideally, people would recognize that what they are seeing is not realistic or useful/practical.
Today it's not *too* bad in that respect. But back then it was significantly worse.

Based on what I know of you, I think you'd greatly enjoy it. To the best of my knowledge it's still on Netflix, also. It's all subtitled, but the Muy Thai is great.Bush4Ever wrote:Have to confess I haven't seen it.AlaskaHawks wrote:Bush, what are your thoughts on Ong Bak?

I'll admit standing on one leg for 10 seconds to perform a crane kick is stupid. I also thought it was bad form by Johnny to walk right into what was a telegraphed move. Other than that hiccup, I thought the movie was pretty spot on representing the martial arts world.
Do any MMA fighters have an aging bald Asian in their corner ready to perform reiki when needed? If not, they should.
Re: Damn, Some Great Movies in 95
Steven Segal has actually crossed over into the MMA world and "taught" Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida. Taught being in quotes because Segal might one of the most self-absorbed and narcisstic human beings on the planet, not to mention so self-unaware that he doesn't realize he's basically a prop for Silva and Machida as a joke.Johnnyblazzed wrote:

[Note: Chozen stuffs the crane kick back in his face in KK2...the "no can defense" move suddenly became defensible...until...wait for it....another magic move was discovered...what are the odds???!!!]
[Note 2: For the lulz, look up the interaction between Judo Gene LeBell and Steven Seagal. Funny story!]

Now I'm excited to see KK2 - I haven't watched it yet. Amazing how progressive and how much influence KK has had on the martial arts world.
As for Segal, I'm sure most of the training was dietary.
Random note: I searched for Segal gifs and found this. I have no idea what the hell it is, but it's Segal to a "T".

Just researched it. Comedy. SSS dropping dookie and peeing himself in a chokehold. Looks like the Aikido training didn't make his ass immune to chokeholds.
