In Space Jam, the line between fantasy and reality, truth and non-truth is a big, fat glowing line, obvious to even a 7 year old.
In the Karate Kid circa 1984, that line (the line of what constituted effective and intelligent martial arts) was messy and muddled. *That's* why the movie ended up leading a lot of people astray.

Nobody, I mean nobody took that movie seriously to real world martial arts. Are you really gonna try and keep arguing that?

He has a good point. All the "serious" martial arts guys were into Jean Claude Gawd Damme's Bloodsport, Kickboxer and Double Impact. Maybe an occasional Steven Seagall flick like Under Seige.

The issue isn't being "hardcore". The issue is being misrepresentative.
You can be misrepresentative in a "hardcore" way or a pussy way. In fact, Bloodsport is loosely based on a famous martial art fraud who potrayed himself as an uber bad ass.

Sounds boring. I just wanna see heart punches and shit.

You wanna know what pisses me off? I watched Tin Cup recently and I can't figure out how to beat guys using shovels and what not. It's impossible. Fucking movie.

Nothing wrong with that.
But most fights are a lot uglier, less clean/sexy, and chaotic than what is usual portrayed in movies.
If you want to watching Jackie Chan roundhouse kick 10 guys at once, more power to you. More power to you if you know what you are watching is nonsense from the point of realism.

Did you know?
Elizabeth Shue didn't fuck Ralph Macchio in real life? And that Pat Morita wasn't a former fry cook from Milwaukee. Seriously. It's fucking true.

I seen plenty of playground fights in the 80s, everytime 2 guys squared up it was wild. One guy doing crane kicks with precision, but it was ineffective because the other guy kept using his paint da fence defense as the crowd oohhhhed and ahhhhhed. Those fights never turned into ugly wrestling matches on the ground.
Abe, the male/female love story version of what I am talking about is when some "110 pound shy (male) wallflower" gets the cheerleader/hot girl because he "stays true to himself" and "is so nice and LISTENS to the bitch" and "oh my! just so happens to play opposite the meanie-meanie alpha male jerk".
Now imagining some 110 pound shy guy thinking that was the behavior to model to get bitches, instead of developing confidence, lifting weights/getting in shape, and obtaining a high social status.
That's roughly what we are dealing with here circa 1984....just on a martial arts front. Thankfully we've moved past those days for the most part.

I was there. I saw the local Mexican kid step in and jab crane kick kid to the face.
The crane kick kid fell like a bitch out of confusion, confused as to why his black belt (obtained at the age of 8) didn't grant him any form of serious self-defense. Not coincidentally, he was morbidly obese.
[Note: Per FBI statistics, a strong majority of fights hit the ground...but I'm not even talking about ground fighting per se. You can train rigorously in standing arts as well.]

I don't think training rigorously for it in case I get it into one is going to be the best use of my time.
Fine. Then don't. Just like I think listening to Beck, while drinking "sensibly priced beer" from the "hip LOCAL (did I say it was local...it's local btw) pub" is generally not a good use of my time these days.
What's your point?

That only a miniscule percentage of people watching Karate Kid considered pursuing martial arts. And only a miniscule percentage of that miniscule percentage thought actual martial arts was portrayed accurately in the movie.
And only a miniscule percentage of that miniscule percentage thought actual martial arts was portrayed accurately in the movie.
This is simply wrong. It contributed non-trivially to the "mystic, non-rigorous" conceptualization and practice of martial arts, especially on a philosophy front.
Like I said, it's pretty obvious both you and Deez are speaking from a place of ignorance. It's not a big deal, but you are both very wrong about this.

NOBODY thought anything realistic of that movie and NOBODY took it seriously when comparing martial arts. Got it puto?
