And that's the only entertaining part of this thread.
Right now, I'm running a program in SAS and drinking a flavored water drink out of a bottle. My facial expression has been unchanged for the last four hours or so. My heart rate increased by 2 beats per minutes during this discussion.

When Superman flies through the air, there isn't potential for me to jump off a building to fly, because I understand gravity and have tons of examples in my mind of people jumping and falling right back to earth.
However, like I said earlier, such a counterbalance and understanding did *not* exist in martial arts during the mid 80s, so there was no competing force to help people distinguish fantasy from reality, exaggeration from realism, etc...
With respect to the Karate Kid:
1. Did we *once* see Miyagi address anything related to grappling?
2. Did we see Daniel spar against a serious and resisting opponent?
3. Did we see Daniel do much of anything related to physical fitness?
No. But we sure managed to squeeze in time to show:
1. Daniel learning the mystic wisdom from an old Asian.
2. Daniel learning powerful techniques through quasi-magic in a completely casual way.
3. Daniel running in the Ocean to "learn balance".
4. Daniel standing on a tree stump crane kicking the air
5. "Winning" fights by punching a person in the chest. Once. Note that punching in the face is not "clean technqiue" (what?).
I'm not even blaming the movie for this. They have zero duty to accurately represent anything. I'm simply saying it was a negative force in the development of martial arts. That's it.
Taking a break from the board. Please reference my last post for more details if you are interested.

Did Bush get beat up as a kid by some wannabe martial arts kid or something?
He's trying to ruin an old entertaining movie because Daniel wasn't shown practicing against a "resisting" opponent. Newsflash... we didn't get to see Daniel fumble through a couple of fingering explorations with "Ali with an I" before finally figuring out where her hole was and fucking her.
You don't see wannabe Peter North types whining about it not being realistic online.

Dude, I said flatly I think it's a very good movie. I've also said they had no obligation to accurately represent anything. I like the movie very much. I think the relationship between Daniel and Miyagi is one of the most underrated relationships I've seen in a movie series.AbeVigodaLive wrote:Did Bush get beat up as a kid by some wannabe martial arts kid or something?

I'm just stating that in terms of how it interacted with the martial arts world, it was a negative thing.
That's it.

What do you expect, they're only given about 95 minutes of film after final editing. I seen the unedited version of part 1 and 2, and it had countless hours of Danny hitting the heavy bag, lifting hay, running the beach, etc it almost put me to sleep. They figured for the purpose of the movie, it'd be better to show the innovative techniques employed by the mystic old asian man such as wax-on wax-off, paint-da-fence, breathe-in breathe-out, etc as the means to fight discipline. I'm sorry these ancient Okinawan fictitious techniques did not meet your standard.

I'm simply saying if you show stupid shit to uninformed people, you are more likely to get shit as an outcome.
In this case, with respect to the outcome of becoming a competent martial artist, virtually everything in the movie is shit. So the average clueless guy in the 80s who earnestly "wants to learn some martial arts" is going to be at a disadvantage.
If you want to show those things *in the name of* entertainment or whatever, that's perfectly fine. But the downside to that is promoting something that is grossly unrealistic, obviously in terms of technique, but also in terms of philosophy (which is a bit trickier to understand than the absurdity of learning how to block by painting a fence).

I said it was one factor amongst many. It's not nearly the most critical piece.AlaskaHawks wrote:FUKING KARATE KID SET THE MARTIAL ARTS MOVEMENT BACK 25 YEARS!!!! FUCKING MR. MIYAGI!!!! DAMN YOU.
The most critical piece is people not willing to subject themselves to rigorous things, whether it be in the body or mind.
Spar against a serious resisting opponent? Nah, I'd rather do kata and work on my breathing.
Learn the less sexy but infinitely more valuable parts of martial arts like groundwork or how to throw a simple jab? Nah, I'd rather break boards.
Establish authentic self-esteem by overcoming real challenges? Nah, we can give your 9 year old a black belt...just so long as his mommy's check clears.

In the KK2, Daniel establishes inner peace and calmness not through therapy, philosophy, or introspection.Kingcarl24 wrote:As a mod on this board I'm going to have to ask Bush to settle down some.
He establishes it by pounding nails into a board. Once again, a magic technique from a magic Asian (Miyagi).
Perhaps I should try that.
