Sir Charles.
Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are dumber than that.

Don't be a rube. That is a phrase that makes zero sense if you reflect on it for more than a minute.

Oh look it's Mr. Socially Inept Literal Guy. Sportswise called, he wants to talk to you.

Or maybe you just spoke mindlessly.

What does "he could turn it on at any time" actually mean then?

Be specific.

Maybe a bit of hyperbole. But I did offer several other sentences to elaborate the overall premise. Unlike a guy like Stockton, Thomas could take over a game with his scoring more often... and did... 16 points in 90 seconds to save the Pistons season in the playoffs vs. Bernard King and the Knicks. 25 points on a bad ankle trying to close out the Lakers in 1988. Those are the two most celebrated occasions where he "turned it on" and had a scoring burst to help his team win when it needed him to.

Was it enough for #24? No. Maybe not even #25. But it's what made him such a force on the court, whether he had a stellar TS% or offensive and defensive rating or not.

Pete Maravich's heart was actually rumoured to be 3x normal size, which would help explain his incredible athletic prowess, not unlike the story behind Secretariat.

If he "turned it on" a non-trivial percentage of the time, AND his overall efficiency/production statistics were relatively modest (for this stage of the voting), it implies that he was far below standards a non-trivial percentage of the time as well. You can't neglect that aspect.

If you hit .280 overall, and hit .330 half of the year....you hit .230 for the other half. You don't get to neglect the .230, just because your sustained peak performance was higher than most.

We get it. "at any time" was a hyperbolic statement. Gawd forbid Abe uses one hyperbole one time. Thanks for driving this point home repeatedly.

No, I'm saying you are overvaluing his peak performance, relative to his usual and standard performance.

That is a different issue altogether, and related to cognitive bias.

There is nothing wrong with remembering and valuing those 16/90 type moments, so long as you are remembering and discrediting him for all the 5-16 games along the way.

We remember the 16/90 moments much more than the 5-16 because they are more unique to our general experiences. It's just a bias. No big deal. But it's the job of superior intellgent beings like myself to remind the normies of such things.
