At age 40 in 2003, with absolutely no lift left and before rule changes were instituted to make it easier for wings in 2006, MJ averaged 20 a game on 44.5% shooting. Anybody who actually watched MJ in the 80s like I did, and watched the pathetic Wizard version of MJ knows that those two versions of MJ are about as comparable as chalk and cheese.

MJ, to virtually any objective observer, is the greatest slasher the game has ever seen. I'm talking about 80s and first 3 peat MJ here. Not the 2nd 3 peat MJ, who had already lost a lot of athletic ability and relied much more on a post up game. His combination of speed, quickness, hops, body control, ability to finish with both hands, ability to use spin and the rim to protect from blocks etc... are simply unmatched.

While defenses have adjusted a fair bit now and the refs no longer call the hand check nearly as tight as they did in the 2006 to 2010 type of time frame, it is still a pretty good time to be a wing player. Between the widespread use of 3 point specialists, no hand check etc, the road to the bucket is still generally less clogged than in prior eras.

Like I said in an earlier post in this thread, I think the young prime MJ would probably average what he did when he played or a tiny bit more. I'm talking about as the game is being called right now. While there is no doubt defenses are more sophisticated, changes in rules and in offensive approach which spread the floor more have made it easier on wings and much harder on post players. Guys like Adrian Dantley, the way rules are called in the post now, would be close to irrelevant in today's nba. Rules and the style of the game favor players who can take it to the rack and this is countered by better defenses and better preparation.

However, I do think that prime MJ in the 2006 to 2010 or so time frame, would have averaged at least a few points more than he did and would go to the line far more than he did per FGA than he did in his heyday. That particular point in time would have been absolutely tailor made for him. One example I use to make that case is Dwyane Wade. Here is "MJ - lite" and he averaged a little over 30 a game in 2009. I'm sorry, but if MJ - lite can do that, the better version could do a fair bit better.

This whole discussion is actually pretty tricky, because there are factors that would run against Jordan, and some that would work out in his favor. You have to balance those out.

You need to take it all into account. You say "they have it harder". Yes, the game is probably called a little tighter on the wings. But defenses aren't nearly as sophisticated on average, and the average wing is probably a small bit more athletic and physically gifted. And so on. One has to really be comfortable in complexity to think this one through.

lol, made up numbers aside.. outside of a few notable hard fouls, no the 80s were not THAT much more physical. hyperboles getrs you nowhere. was more contact allowed in general? yup but so the fuck what? defenses were much worse during that period. there was only one rick mahorn, the rambis clothesline only happened once and the bad boy piston were the exception at the end of the decade, not the standard.

This is exactly what I mean. You are taking a baseline from the old era, and not adjusting (it seems) for the factors that would depress his scoring average.

If I have a factor that (let's suppose) would depress my average 2 points per game, and another the would raise it 2.5 points per game, you only come out 0.5 points per game ahead (all else being equal).

That is the challenge. Finding out what factors would a) raise his average b) depress his average and then c) how A and B balance against one another.

On another side note since I thought I saw it earlier in the thread: going from 37 points to 40 points per game would be EXTREMELY difficult, simply because it becomes harder to raise your average the higher up the scale you go. In other words, going from 37 to 40 is much more difficult than going from 17 to 20. It is sort of like losing weight. A 300 pound person (Artman?) can go from 300 to 295 by taking a walk around the block. But a 145 pound person would really have to bust his hump to go from 145 to 140.

Like seriously though, I don't have a horse in this fight, but when I have watched games from that era I get the sense that there was a lot more "free wheeling free flowing" basketball based in finesse than the type of game we saw beyond that era.
