Karl Malone, goddammit.
Re: 2014 Anger General Greatest of All Time #18
Pippen, K. Malone and Baylor should round out the Top 20.

I see a Scottie Pippen vs. John Havlicek debate brewing in the next few days...

Malone.

I want to vote for Karl Malone...but him and Stockton are like co-leader. Can't vote for one without voting for the other.Ghostown42 wrote:Karl Malone, goddammit.

What is it about Malone? I just don't see it. He has 2 mvp's, one of them(1999) being arguably the worst mvp vote in league history.
Him and Baylor are very similar to me. They both put up gaudy numbers and are excellent playes but have little to show for in terms of team playoff success.
And neither can use the excuse of not having enough talent around them like Oscar or Barry(who still won titles by the way).

I have to give Malone credit though. He was one of the most durable superstars in nba history and was consistently a superstar from about age 23 to 36 and was a star for a couple years after that. Pretty amazing.
Re: 2014 Anger General Greatest of All Time #18
I had Malone in that in large part to his MVPs (how many more multiple MVP winners are there on board?), and also due to his absurd piling of volume statistics and volume accomplishments. Like Steph indicated above, this was due to him being freakishly well-conditioned and being able to play at an A-level for so long. Sort of like a big man version of Kobe.
Taking a break from the board. Please reference my last post for more details if you are interested.

I said this back at #15 in short-form. The Mailman is basically Kobe Bryant minus the titles, which is why he's deservedly 7-10 spots lower on the all-time list. I just don't see how the guy who is a:Bush4Ever wrote:I had Malone in that in large part to his MVPs (how many more multiple MVP winners are there on board?), and also due to his absurd piling of volume statistics and volume accomplishments. 2-time MVP
3-time Finals participant
#2 all-time in NBA points
#6 all-time in NBA rebounds
Career 25/10 guy
...isn't being voted AT LEAST into the #18 all-time slot. I kinda baffles me. Do you know how many 25/10 guys there have been in the modern era (post-1980)? One....Karl Malone. Only 4 players have done it in history: Wilt, Baylor & Pettit...all from a largely inflated statistical era.

There are a lot of moving parts in these discussions, and we all have our own weighing systems and schemas for how we evaluate players.
The main question on Malone is probably if his positives are enough to override his lack of rings, especially when there are some pretty good lead dog title winners still on board.
I think it is, but I can see some reasonable arguments against it as well.

I agree with what you're saying, I just think the reasonable arguments are what makes him drop to the mid/high teens, as he already has. Statistically speaking he's top 5 all-time, and it's not like his teams were complete hacks, they just never got over the big hump.Bush4Ever wrote:There are a lot of moving parts in these discussions, and we all have our own weighing systems and schemas for how we evaluate players.

We've come to the point where it's time for him to earn a place on this list.
