Two points:

1. Having 8-12 teams trims the fat from the middle and bottom, not the top. Comparing Finals to Finals or even ECF to ECF (or WCF), I don't think you see much difference.

2. How many of those guys were HOFers in their own right, divorced from Russell and winning? Some certainly were, but some were definitely not, like KC Jones. It is pretty safe to say that Russell and the thrust from winning propelled at least some of those guys to the HOF that would have otherwise not gotten in under more normal circumstances.

My vote is for Russell, by the way, Y2K. Jordan is also a perfectly good choice for number one as well.
Was K.C. Jones selected by a Senior Committee or something? The resume is just not becoming of a HOFer outside of the championships in college and with Boston.
No. Inducted as a player in 1989.

The only guys that would make a top 30 list that Russell played with are probably Cousy and Havlicek. Cousy had been with the Celtics for 6 years though prior to Russell and had won all of 2 playoff series in those six years.

1) It may trim the fat, but having only 2 Playoff series' instead of 3 (some of which were best of 3 or 5 during Russ' day) significantly reduces the chance of star players getting injured, which could obviously have a major impact on who wins the Championship.

2) Winning is much easier when you're stacked with significantly more talent top-to-bottom "as a team" than your peers... and that was the case with the Celtics throughout the overwhelming majority of their run.

Meh. Cousy had been there for six years and Sharman for five and they had 2 playoff series wins total. In comes Russell and the Celtics trade their all star C as part of the deal for Russell, and the titles came. Cousy goes, Sharman goes and the titles never stop as long as Russell is there. Russell leaves, they go to the lottery even with Havlicek entering his prime.

Everything is always an agenda with you TDK. You're so transparent. Anything to diminish Russell since many consider him GOAT and that just won't do with you.

I have Russell #3 all-time, and FTR I'm not the only one who feels this way about him. Yet you want to single me out.

It's all good...

That being said, the Celtics were the #1 Scoring and Rebounding team for yearS before Russell arrived... so don't pretend they were some scrub bottom-feeder. He was the "missing piece" Defensively; however Boston still wins a boatload of Championships if Russell doesn't score a point because the Celtics were stacked on Offense... and last I heard the only way to WIN is by scoring more points than your opponent.

Talk about transparent and agenda-based... you Russell lovers seem to forget that Offense is HALF the game, but "only" when Russ' name is mentioned.

"Conveniently".

So how many Championships does Russell win if he joined the Royals instead of the Celtics, the former being a team that was dead-last in Scoring?

You think Russ is going to walk in and turn that team into an instant Dynasty?

Fat chance.

Also, Russell wasn't the only player added to the Celts roster in 57. Heinsohn won ROY over Russell... and nevermind the "injury excuse" for why Bill didn't win because the POINT is that Celtics' roster was STACKED with talent. Hell, Cousy was MVP of the league in 57. Bailey Howell was a perennial 20/10 guy for almost a decade BEFORE he joined the Celtics. Sharman was a perennial All Star and All NBA player for yearS before Russell. Hondo won 2 Championships and a FMVP "after" Russell left (and he would have easily won 1 or 2 with Russ on the team, if the award had been around at the time).

Again... top-to-bottom no team in the league was even close to the level of talent those Celtics had, for the vast majority of their run.

Yet you want us to think it was all Bill Russell.

Boston Celtics traded Ed Macauley and rookie Cliff Hagan for rookie Bill Russell. All 3 in the HOF and have championships so might have been the greatest trade in NBA history.

I think you meant to say that the Celtics traded Macauley and Hagan for the draft rights to Russell. Macauley was considered the Celtics best player at the time and a seven time all star. Turns out that the Celtics didn't miss him did they?
