Kareem's greatest sin is poor PR.

That's a major part of it. Nostalgia is a major factor. In kareem's case, hardly anyone tells the younger generation just how great he was and all of those moments that get overshadowed because of Magic's larger than life persona.876Stephen wrote:That might be part of it, in the grand scheme of things but none of that plays a role in my ranking.Shill Jackson wrote:this is primarily because Kareem kept the press distant, was a West-centric athlete and his conversion to Islam was viewed as radical.876Stephen wrote:Jordan is the unquestioned GOAT to me. Jones was a 21+ PPG Scorer his last 8 years in the league, and often times he literally carried Boston's Offense in the Playoffs / Finals... but I guess Offense / Scoring only matters when Russell's name isn't involved.vcsgrizzfan wrote:Sam Jones was never considered a lead dog or anything close to that. Russell, except for his rookie season where he finished 7th in MVP voting because he missed a third of the season due to the Melbourne Olympics and his final season when he also finished 7th in MVP voting was always top 4 in MVP voting and always the lead dog. Sam Jones backed up Sharman for a number of those rings. He was a 'nice' player.thedangerouskitchen wrote:vcsgrizzfan wrote:Russell. All he ever did was win.
Well if winning was the be-all-end-all, Sam Jones won 10 rings in 12 years "and" he was Boston's most prolific Scorer for most of his career... yet you'd be hard-pressed to find his name on anyone's Top 5-10-15-20 list.
Just sayin'...
Overlooked also with Russell are his two collegiate titles at USF which was a complete non basketball power before and after him.
Like I said, all Russell did was win.

I get that and agree, but I think in order to be considered GOAT you have to be both dominant and transcendent. Jordan would dominate today's league at his position; Russell...I'm not convinced. He'd be very good, don't get me wrong. But I don't see prime Bill Russell being easily the best front court player in today's game. I think Duncan could handle himself against Bill, for one, and Timmy's way past prime.
What say you?

People act like Jordan was Gretzky, who simply blew everyone else away statistically there really can be no argument for anyone else.
Calling him the best is one thing. Saying he is without question the best ever and BY FAR the best ever are pure hyperbole and bullshit.

Re: 2014 Anger General Top 10 Greatest of All Time: #1 selection
Are we not evolving Russell into what he'd most likely be if he was born if he played when Jordan and the others played? That's not really fair.americaninfidel wrote:All he did was win.vcsgrizzfan wrote:Sam Jones was never considered a lead dog or anything close to that. I'm not sure, to be honest. That's what makes these comparisons so difficult.Kevin wrote:Are we not evolving Russell into what he'd most likely be if he was born if he played when Jordan and the others played? That's not really fair.americaninfidel wrote:All he did was win.vcsgrizzfan wrote:

Number 1 in any all-time NBA list is always a formality.
It's always Number 2 and on where the true debate comes in.

That's true. Russell and his 11 - ELEVEN - rings can't be argued. That's almost twice as many as the player ranked 2nd.dwcmwa wrote:Number 1 in any all-time NBA list is always a formality.
