Burnes to Douchebacks.

Kub serious question - how come the Mets did not sign any of the 3 big FA pitchers if they have an unlimited budget? They clearly could use more pitching right?

It's a fair question and the answer is that such a move would be antithetical to David Stearns' philosophy. He is strongly opposed to long-term deals for players into their mid-late 30's, especially starting pitchers. He prefers higher AAV and shorter-term deals, with Soto and Yamamoto being exceptions at ages 26 and 25. This also explains the staredown with Alonso, Stearns will bring him back only at his price, not at Pete or Boras' ask. For SP he's going to try to recreate what he did last season with Manaea/Severino but this time with Montas/Holmes. He's also a big believer in having 6-7 viable options being more important than having 1 ace with lesser depth so it wouldn't surprise me to see the Mets add another guy on a 1-year deal if they don't sign Sasaki, like Verlander or Quintana.

Again in the right situation, ie. Yamamoto or let's project ahead and say Skubal or Skenes, the Mets will go to 8+ years for a SP. But none of Burnes, Fried or Snell were worthwhile. And yes Snell got 5-years but even if Stearns wanted him he wasn't leaving the West Coast anyway.

Yeah the Mets should be able to get Pete on a 3-4 year deal now, esp after the Teo deal with the Dodgers.

It feels like the narrative flipped very quickly that no one wants to play in Toronto. It was just a minute ago they were signing Gausman and Springer. What happened?

You need his bat behind Soto.

We need "a" bat behind Soto, I don't know if we need Pete's. Pete has been trending in a bad direction for few years now and things generally don't improve for lumbering RHB 1B as they get older. His best is almost certainly behind him. The truth is that he dropped the ball big time, the Mets offered him something like a 7/158 extension the other year and he got greedy/delusional and turned it down. There is no way he's in prime Goldschmidt or Freeman's neighborhood and he wanted to be paid even more than them. Now the sobering reality that modern baseball doesn't value players of Pete's profile is sinking in and the Mets reportedly offered 3/70, and even that is generous when weighed with his projected fangraphs value. Now with that being said, yes, without Pete, the lineup needs more punch and there aren't really any strong FA fits otherwise. But that will not be enough to force Stearns into handing out a bad contract, he would sooner pour the excess funds into the bullpen, he recognizes that there is no one formula to win 90 games.

Teo gave the Dodgers a discount at $22m per year and Mets wants that with Pete. And he wants that $31m projected amount I think.

Yep. I heard this as well but it's probably the same report.

It seems inevitable that he's going to the Dodgers and is likely using Toronto and San Diego as a way to get more money.

Didn't Ohtani do the same thing?

Time for Mr House to move the Dodgers from side chick to main squeeze.

The bonus pool is capped so I dont think it was that. I thought the Padres had a legit chance I am not sure how the Jays keep getting in on the action lol.

I forgot Roki would be signing for cheap because of the amateur international free agent rule.

Somehow, the Dodgers get another Japanese star for cheaper than they're worth.

I am totally not jealous...
