Math Riddle

Post by Bush4Ever. »

This came into my feed. Apparently it has caused many autisms over the internet (last year?):

I Bought A Cow For $800. I sold it for $1000. I bought it again for $1100. I sold it again for $1300 Dollars.

How Much Did I Earn?

Final sale price - total money invested = answer

$1,300 - (800 + 100) = $400
Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are dumber than that.

1000- 800 =200 profit. take the original capital of 800 +200 + own savings of 100 to buy the cow again =$1,1000. You are now out $100 as your new investment over and above your capital of 1000 which is made up of your original 800 capital and 200 profit. you sell the cow for 1300. Initial profit seems to be $200 but since you reached into your savings to poney up an extra $100. your profit is really $100.
you made $100 on the transaction. you should have stopped after you sold the cow for $1000

No.
It’s not a math question but an accounting question. The money used to repurchase the cow is recycled money from the initial transaction plus an extra $100 of equity.

I know the answer but would rather not say.

Rob is definitely wrong though, that's all I will divulge.

Accounting is math.

The investor has brought $900 of their own money to the table while making a final sale of $1,300. They earned $400.

Rob sincerely believes he has $400 in his pocket. This is the genius that grizzfag lauds over me as an insightful person who would do good in picket stocks

Two transactions of $200 profit = $400

People spaz out too much about the fact that the same cow was bought. If I bought a cow for 800 and sold for 1000 I made 200. If I then bought a horse for 1100 and sold it for 1300 I also made 200. The first transaction has noting to do with the second.

The only new money created is the extra $100 to make up the purchase price of the second transaction $1,100.00.
