Imagine someone being dumb enough to compare a 5-time NBA MVP to Rudy Gobert. :lol:

You compared him to Jokic and said he’d average a triple double, fat guy.

Yeah, I'm cool with that. Dude had 16 triple-doubles in an era where assists weren't exactly handed out as freely as today. Russell would dominate, just like he did back then.

Right....cuz Gobert runs fast breaks, and consistently gets assists. And Gobert definitely has the offense run THROUGH HIM like Russell did, right?

Russell would be closer to Jokic, offensively, with Gobert's defensive talents.
Yea… let’s magically inflate a 15pt 4ast guy to Jokic’s near triple double numbers :laugh3:

And you people have the nerve to call tdk “glory days” :kg:
He wouldn't have his scoring ability....but he WOULD be operating the offense from the top of the key, just like Jokic.

In another thread Rob said Giannis would have “disrupted the 80s & 90s completely”. Insinuating that if Giannis went back in time to that era he’d dominate even more. And apparently if 50s/60s Bill played in this era he’d dominate to the tune of averaging a triple double while getting multiple DPOYs.

Kinda funny how this time travel stuff works. :lol:

It is true assists were generally scored more strictly in the 60s, but there were also more possessions to accumulate assists as well, both from pace (at least sometimes) and way more minutes played.

He seemed to averaged 3.6 assists per 36 minutes, which probably contained more possessions per minute than even modern teams....but that would be 3.6 strictly scored assists, not a looser interpretation 3.6 assists.

So you have different effects in different directions basically. I really wish we had per-possession statistics from back then.

More like a pre-injury Bill Walton with Rudy Gobert-level defense, if you will.

The greats are going to be greats in any era. Thinking Giannis' game isn't tailor-made for the 80's/90's style of basketball is silly, at best. He's a more athletic version of Jordan, bigger than Jordan, with better passing skills. His shot outside of 10 feet is pretty shit, but that wouldn't matter AT ALL back then.

Jabbar... when you look at the "total package" he trails only MJ on the GOAT list.

To put Russell's assists in context, he was top 20 in assists per game every year of his career, despite playing with Bob Cousy. After Cousy retired, Russell had four seasons where he was top 8 in assists in the NBA. The latter half of his career he was roughly 5 a game in an era where they were hard to come by.

Picture today’s players without the advanced nutrition medical and weight conditioning workouts. Both High School and college shooting the 3.

I just hate the argument.

Would have had 6-9 Bill Russell Finals MVP awards....had they existed

He should be in everyone's top 4, period.
6 at best: .

1957 = Heinsohn or Cousy
1959 = Heinsohn or Cousy (even FRANK RAMSEY dropped 26/6/3/47%)
1964 = Jones
1968 = Hondo
1969 = Hondo

That leaves 6 for Russell... and even a couple of those Finals series were debatable as well, so 4-6 in all likelihood.

Russell, but for his rookie season when he missed much of it to captain team USA to Olympic Gold in Melbourne ALWAYS led the Celtics in MVP voting. He won it 5 times and but for that rookie season when he was 7th, was never worse than fourth. He was ALWAYS doing that despite not being the offensive leader. It seems incongruous that voters would magically view him differently in the finals and not give him the vast majority of the finals MVPs.

Russell averaged 4.3 Assists per game for his career, and only twice did he average more than 5 a game... this, in an era when teams "averaged" 100-110 FGA per game. Hence, a testament to just how weak the game was back then.

No dumb dumb. It's because assists were not handed out easily back then. Very different. And Russell being top 8 in the NBA in assists four times means for the era, he was an excellent passer. Period.

Russell also shot .427%, .442%. .457% and .467% and finished 5th, 3rd, 2nd and 4th in the league respectively.

Like I said, weak league bub.
