Back in the day.

Post by Da Stars. »

When goalies did not wear a mask? When very few players wore a helmet? When the QB could be hit in the head? When any hard foul was a common foul? When getting hit by a pitch was common but not aimed at the head?

I ask with all rule changes in all sports were they really better 50 years ago?

Well... there is no debate over the fact that professional athletes were MUCH tougher and MUCH more alpha-manly men back in the day (vs. today).

Imagine being a QB knowing that on any given Pass Attempt the Defense could cripple you off the field on a stretcher with a helmet-led shot to the chin. Imagine being a slasher in the NBA knowing that on any given drive to the basket the defender could rip your head off with a clotheline and just get whistled for a common foul (maybe a Flagrant at best if it's really bad).

No question it's better (and easier) for the players today... as a fan, I guess it depends on the era you were brought up in.
"Today's NBA is soft, the Defense is weak, and the rules 'really' favor the Offense."

"Lebron doesn’t guard for a full game and our game plan was to get him to play defense and he left me open all game."

Not even sure what you are trying to say? It doesn't really make sense.

Looking at hockey specifically, if players didn't wear helmets, a few players a season might be killed or maimed for life. The advent of composite sticks, the huge advancements made in skate technology which increases the speed of players and the fact pads are made of rock hard material and can be used as offensive weapons totally changes the dynamics of the game. Much of that latter part is obviously also true of football.

There would be absolutely no one willing to play goal in this era of composite sticks where even the weakest shooters can fling it at 80 plus miles per hour compared to an era with uncurved wooden sticks with the vast majority of players only capable of 40 mph wrist shots. It just isn't comparable.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are dumber than that.

Yeah 'cause taking a 40 mph puck to the face is like getting bit by a mosquito.

One response and one response only ya autistic retard. I never said anything of the sort.

But if you don't recognize the difference between the consequences of being hit by a 40 mph wrist shot versus a 105 mph snap shot, you're a bigger moron than you prove yourself to be here on a daily basis.

I can think of a few reasons why sports overall seem shittier today but eliminating or at least lessening the risk of life altering brain injures/head trauma for players is not one of them.
