It has to do with the fact that the Mets hired and empowered the smartest man in baseball last Fall, and he's only just getting started

It's a good question, the article Passan linked above features interesting speculation. Other than Soto who the Mets will hand a blank check to, every other free agent is flawed in some way including Alonso.

The thing is that Stearns is way smarter than me or any other fan so he won't have to break the bank or go for the sexy name other than Soto, he will unlock value and find the right pieces he can squeeze the most production out of like he did with Severino, Manaea, Iglesias, etc. Even though he's a big injury risk I would find it funny if we signed Fried just because Braves fans have an emotional attachment to him.

Trout has plenty left but Sproat's ceiling is too high, I can't see our shiny new Pres of Bball Ops doing it. It's just not his style. He never flipped prospects with Milwaukee and never overpaid for the sake of winning the back pages. Soto will be an exception because he's 26 and Cooperstown bound but everyone else including Alonso is going to be treated like a depreciating asset.

On pitching it would not surprise me if the Mets avoid all of Snell, Burnes, Fried, etc. I can see Kikuchi or even Bieber on a pillow deal.

Then again if Soto stays with NYY the Mets will have a lot of money to burn.
