I only have experience with the Sonic Sega games.
Sonic Spinball was my first video game, because it came with the Sega system. There were four levels, and I would always crush the first three (even getting two extra lives), and then totally tank the final level. One day I was playing and I actually got the final emerald for level four (which would have opened the boss room), but I had to go to a parade for my little league team. My parents didn't let me pause the game, since we only had one TV in the house. Suffice it to say, I was pissed off. I eventually got the Xbox bundle of Sonic games that included Sonic Spinball, and eventually beat it at age 26, finally concluding the challenge I started about 15 years earlier.
Sonic 2 was a legit great game, especially with the Sonic and Knuckles add-on that let you play as Knuckles. For Sonic 2, I would always get lost in one level (Metropolis) that would block me from advancing. I also beat this game on Xbox, and honestly I don't even remembering figuring out what I had done wrong in Metropolis as a kid.
Sonic and Knuckles was a great game for like half the game, and then it turned to shit. The methods for getting the Chaos Emeralds was also too difficult for me (at least at a younger age). I would get maybe three or four and then hit a wall, ala Sonic 2 and the ramps. I did beat it on Xbox.
I got Sonic 1 eventually, but didn't really get inspired by it, since I had already played much better Sonic games. Sonic 3 I rented a few times as a kid, but didn't advance much.
Out of the games I played at length:
Sonic 2
Sonic-Knuckles
Sonic Spinball
Sonic 1
I suspect Sonic 3 would slide into second place if I gave it more focused attention as an adult.
What are your thoughts on Sonic the Hedgehog?

Based post. My early experiences with Sonic were of either watching my older brothers play or unsuccessfully attempting them myself, as I was way too young for a game that required the kind of coordination and timing that the Genesis games did. Took a break from it for a long time (skipped the Dreamcast games) and rediscovered with Sonic Generations which was just awesome. Sonic has had an impressive rebirth as a mainstream figure with the successful movies and Netflix show.

Played the first few… but wasn’t super into it. My oldest daughter was a closet fan of the tv show Sonic Underground, which kinda surprised me. She’ll still throw it on randomly from time to time.

Absolutely none. although the very first game on Sega was alright and gave me something different to play than the superior NES

Re: What are your thoughts on Sonic the Hedgehog?
I enjoyed the games up until sonic cd, so that would have been sonic 1-3 and sonic & knuckles. As the games started to care more about the look instead of the gameplay i stopped playing and havent had any interest to go back. I think i would need the right word of mouth toever consider playing sonic again. As for the movies i enjoyed the 1st but havent seen the 2nd.
