Re: MVP
Ohtani almost surely still wins it. Zero doubt he wins it if he gets to 50/50.

As long as Ohtani doesn’t get hurt, I feel the same way. But, if the Mets end up making the playoffs, Lindor will get most of the credit for that, and it could make things interesting._Vcsgrizzfan_ wrote: ↑Wed Sep 04, 2024 11:20 am Ohtani almost surely still wins it. I agree with you fellas completely, Ohtani has it virtually locked. If all of the following happens - NYM make the playoffs, Lindor makes a hard run at a .900 OPS, Lindor hits 35 HR / 30 SB, and Ohtani finishes the season without doing anything too spectacular, Lindor will get some 1st place votes.
In my view, if you removed Ohtani from LAD, they would still be in playoff contention, whereas if you removed Lindor from NYM, they would be pretty much lost. Ohtani is offensive player of the year while Lindor is MVP. But the voters won't see it that way.

Especially if he happens to make the 50/50 club. That is just WAY TOO SHINY a new toy for the voters to ignore.

imho Lindor has a very large penis. I can’t tell you how much this guy has helped my pocketbook this year, including last night.

Agreed, even though the rule change has turned those clubs into something entirely new. Steals are up 40% across the league, Ohtani's 50 are just not comparable to what 50 used to mean. Rickey would have stolen every time he reached base and guys like Reyes, Ichiro or Juan Pierre would have broken 100 with these rules.
Even though he will not win MVP, what Lindor is doing is spectacular. He is already top-20 all-time among MLB SS in JAWS (measure of Hall of Fame likelihood). He is the 2nd clean SS all-time with 5 or more 30 HR seasons (Ernie Banks with 5 and A-Rod with 7, so Lindor is likely to become with first clean SS with more than 5). He is in the midst of the best offensive season of his career while playing a sparkling SS, in the 99th percentile of OAA. He was getting a TON of hate and flak when he stumbled out of the gates as a Met with some like Keith Olbermann going so far as to state that his would be the Mets new 'Bobby Bonilla contract.' Meanwhile he is now performing better than he ever had in Cleveland and has totally outperformed his salary to date. I'm proud of him.

The Lindor/Soto latino vibes of the next 5-10 years of Mets baseball is going to send racists into a tizzy. 'Los Mets' may become the standard uniform text with 'Mets' the alternate.

Re: MVP
I thought this was pretty interesting. The allure of the 50/50 is overshadowing the fact that Ohtani is not actually having a spectacular season at the dish *by MVP standards,* while also not playing the field,
Meanwhile an 0-4 for Ohtani and 2 more hits as well as more sparkling play at SS will open up a bigger fWAR lead for Lindor

It's nice to see the board finally understanding that doing something that has never been done in history doesn't automatically equate to your overall performance being the best.
"omgpitchingandhittingatthesametime" is being replaced by "omg5050".
Unique composition of performance does not mean top tier value of performance.

To be fair, Lindor is winning fWAR while losing bWAR. It's not as though he's clear-cut better from an analytics perspective.
But from where I'm sitting Lindor is flat-out more valuable (by a lot) in intangible ways. Ohtani is essentially a hired gun - an excellent one - but a mercenary nonetheless who gets 4 AB per game but otherwise watches Cocomelon on an iPad while his teammates play the field. His teammates like him but he doesn't speak to the media any more than the bare minimum, doesn't hold anyone accountable, doesn't 'lead' in any non-hitting sense. Lindor called and led the team meeting that turned the season around for the Mets, participates in every mound visit and does solo ones on his own to calm pitchers down or fire them up, acts like a quarterback on the field defensively moving people around, does media after every win or loss, and even reported to ST super early to work with minor leaguers. Most importantly, Ohtani has essentially slotted himself in to the most well-oiled winning machine in baseball, the Dodgers have won the NL West in 10 of the last 11 seasons. If it wasn't Ohtani it would be someone else, what he has done is easy. Lindor is not quite singlehandedly, but not far from it, rebuilding a broken team culture and instilling a sense of professionalism and winning in an organization where none existed before. If Lindor had torn a hamstring on day one of the season the Mets would be somewhere in the dungeons of the NL standings, while if the same had happened with Ohtani, I have no doubt at all that the Dodgers would have found themselves in the playoffs anyway.

Kyle Schwarber is at least on par with those dudes... if not better.
