We never sent pro's until 1992. Come on man.
That's completely irrelevant to his point.
Please do tell.

We got so cocky that we stopped sending pros and figured our best college players could get the job done (and they could for a while) but over time international basketball closed the gap to where our college players weren't enough.

That's when we sent the big dogs in.

International basketball got better from the time that our college players could beat them until 1992 when we decided to first send NBA players (my mistake, I thought we sent them back in the earliest days of Olympic basketball).

Regardless, if international basketball got better in the time from college players going to the Olympics until 1992, you don't think they would be even better today?
Bump for Uncle Stars.

I believe this is what Grizz is also saying.

No bullshit I wish we went back to using non-professionals to compete in the olympics.

Shit’s just too easy with pros, I’ve tuned into 0 mins of olympic basketball. Every game should be a 30 pt blowout, otherwise they’re mailing it in and nobody wants to see that either.

You believe correctly. International players are miles and miles ahead of where they were in 1992. While American pros in general have gotten better as well, the gap between the two is the narrowest it has ever been.

I don’t believe that for one second. Internation teams would be top heavy but we’d still be putting the best pro prospects out there from the college level.

You could make a solid case for 4 of the ten best players in the NBA currently being international.

Jokic, Giannis, Luka and SGA. In 1992, that very notion would have seemed preposterous.

Yep I agree. If it was a team of the best non-US players vs the best US players, we'd probably lose.

We should do that as another game in another off-season for shits and giggles.

Dude. We were barely winning before 88 and lost in 88 to the Russians. International players are way better than back then.

And the college talent pool was deeper then, with the vast majority of players playing at least 3 college seasons, and much more seasoned.

Can you imagine a college team trying to beat crappy old Canada with SGA, Jamal Murray. RJ Barret, Dwight Powell, Dillon Brooks.... They would get absolutely freaking steamrolled.

I’m assuming House meant non-pros across the board. Not our best college players vs NBA pros from other countries.

Two reasons the Europeans were beating the USA in international play. They were catching up. The Europeans were playing years together, the USA sending a bunch of kids only playing several weeks together.

But what does by drunk stupid ass know. LOL. :suds:

What would be a ton of fun is a best of 7 series of rest of world versus US. I think international probably wins, but it is a helluva fight.

I dunno and maybe I’m wrong about what House meant here. That Serbian team with Jokic would massacre a USA team filled with college kids. Giannis would have a field day. Luka would humiliate them. But if we’re talking non-pros vs non-pros it’d be a lot more interesting.

Tell me something Grizz. In your humble opinion, who wins if no country can send a member to any international even more than once?

Then the US wins every time. Their depth of talent wins out, assuming teams have a reasonable amount of time to play together and gel. In pretty much any other country, if you take out the top ten or so guys, you are left with a pretty weak team. The US 11-20 would still be comparatively very strong.

I worded that wrong. I meant non-NBA guys. I’m talking about non-NBA players at all for all teams. I’d even let french and croation fags use their pros, just not NBA guys.

Our college players have evolved just as well as anyone else, these aren’t your 1972 college players.

You put a squad together with the top 12-15 college players in the US today, that’s a fierce squad believe you me.

I still think the US would lose more often than they would win, but that would be a fair fight.
