I would argue Shaq was a top five to top ten player as a rookie. I remember reading how McHale and Parish were watching him from the bench and McHale saying it was time for him to retire.

He was 7th in the MVP vote, 7th in PER, and a defensive monster at the time. Pretty safe bet for that type of ranking.

Being a complete freak of nature helps you bypass a lot of "rookie stuff". For Shaq, the freakish elements of his body and nature matched the offensive era a little bit better then Wemby though. No matter what level of freak you are...shooting is more of a lottery than dunks, bunnies, and five-footers.

Until he can will the Spurs to win more games, he'll just stay labeled an "empty stats" sort of guy, like Kevin Love's 26 & 13 on a mediocre Wolves team.
