Of course he has a point you moron. You are just being disingenuous as usual and ignoring the fact that a much larger percentage of shots are taken from 3, therefor making the average shot made that much more valuable.thedangerouskitchen wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2024 12:13 pmHold on a second... I though you claimed today's players are soooo much better and more skilled??? How can that be when they shoot basically the same % from the field?
PS: The league shot higher than that throughout the entire decade of the 80's. In fact, 10 of the top 11 all-time highest FG% seasons belong to the 80's, including the Top 6 spots. So are we to conclude that the players from the 80's were better and more skilled than today's players??? If not, then you have no point.

If the opposing team was allowed to play Defense the way it was played in the 90's I'd agree with you. As it is in today's NBA, however, Defense is an afterthought... meaning the majority of those "further distant" shots are of the WIDE OPEN variety, and as anyone who has ever played the game knows, it's tougher hitting a 15-20 foot jumper with a defender drapped all over you than it is to hit a wide-open 25 footer with no defender in sight.Robceltsfan wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2024 12:16 pmShooting the same percentage while taking shots at average 10-15 feet further from the basket is IMPRESSIVE AS FUCK.thedangerouskitchen wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2024 12:13 pmHold on a second... Context and perspective help... it's not just black/white, cut/dry as you try to make it seem.

Typical cement-headed BWGC thinking hitting WIDE OPEN 25 footers is the same as hitting 15-20 foot shots with defenders drapped all over them.
Clearly the BWGC never actually played basketball.

Every season in the 2020s has a higher average FT percentage than every season in the 80s and 90s.
Let me guess...that's also because of "muh no defense", right?
Shooting free throws is pretty much the strictest (because it's a relatively easy shot) and most conservative test of shooting differences you can generate (that also admits of perfect comparison, since it's the same shot every time in any era)...and the modern era *still* outperforms old school by a fair amount (about 2-3 percentage points over the 80s and 90s).

You are confused. The 3 point line is generally defended more vigorously than in any era in history. Certainly much more closely than in the 80s and 90s. The whole reason offenses are more successful is that so much more of the court has to be defended. Defending from 2-3 feet beyond the arc and in is much more taxing on the defense than guarding 16 feet and in. With good ball movement and inside out play, you will get your fair share of wide open 3s, but that is because of good offense and more court to cover.thedangerouskitchen wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2024 12:28 pm Typical cement-headed BWGC thinking hitting WIDE OPEN 25 footers is the same as hitting 15-20 foot shots with defenders drapped all over them.

at bragging about today's teams averaging 75%-78% FT shooting the past 10 years vs. 75-77% in the 80's/90's, as if that's supposed to prove anything.
The BWGC is getting beyond desperate ever since the Commish, the VP of Ops and several current coaches/players exposed this era as soft and weak a week or so ago,

The rules/style back then made it so that players were actually allowed to play tough, hard, physical Defense, and as a result many more shots were contested (making it harder to score) vs. today, where the style / rules in place have made it easier than ever to Score.LeBronMonsterDunk wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2024 12:31 pmWhat kind of retard would be taking those kinds of shots?thedangerouskitchen wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2024 12:28 pm 15-20 foot shots with defenders drapped all over them.

Nah, they were morons. Taking an assload of shots in the 16-23 foot range....apparently under extreme pressure, according to YOU. Instead of just stepping back a few feet, spreading the offense, and get 50% more points for every shot made.thedangerouskitchen wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2024 12:42 pmThe rules/style back then made it so that players were actually allowed to play tough, hard, physical Defense, and as a result many more shots were contested (making it harder to score) vs. today, where the style / rules in place have made it easier than ever to Score.LeBronMonsterDunk wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2024 12:31 pmWhat kind of retard would be taking those kinds of shots?thedangerouskitchen wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2024 12:28 pm 15-20 foot shots with defenders drapped all over them.

The six highest FT% seasons have all occurred in the past 8 years.
And yes, TDK, when you have 45,000-65,000 free throw attempts every season, a couple percentage points is a YUUUUGE difference.

Uhh...yeah a 2-3 percentage point difference over approximately 500-600K free throws (50K-60K FTs shot per year) against 200K free throws shot in the 2020s is actually a gigantic statistical difference.thedangerouskitchen wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2024 12:37 pm at bragging about today's teams averaging 75%-78% FT shooting the past 10 years vs. 75-77% in the 80's/90's, as if that's supposed to prove anything.

There's waaaaay more wide-open shots taken today than ever before... as you said, the spacing makes it much harder for the Defense (and by default, much easier for the Offense)._Vcsgrizzfan_ wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2024 12:34 pmYou are confused. Better spacing = better offense = harder on defense
None of that means "weak/soft defense".

Players play in real time... they don't have the benefit of hindsight. The game style/rules were different back then. Defenders were allowed to be very physical / lots of contact, and that alone makes it harder to get a shot off (and make the shot) vs. playing in a soft/weak league where zero contact is allowed and there's enough spacing to drive a truck in the paint, which again, makes it much easier to shoot/score.LeBronMonsterDunk wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2024 12:44 pmSo the players "back then" just weren't good enough to take better shots, or were they just stupid and didn't know long mid range shots were the worst shot in basketball?thedangerouskitchen wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2024 12:42 pmThe rules/style back then made it so that players were actually allowed to play tough, hard, physical Defense, and as a result many more shots were contested (making it harder to score) vs. today, where the style / rules in place have made it easier than ever to Score.LeBronMonsterDunk wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2024 12:31 pm

4.4% over 28 attempts per game is 22.0 versus 20.7 points per game. Do you know how many teams would KILL for an extra 1.3 points per game, EVERY game, guaranteed?
