Re: MLB Hot Stove: Ohtani signs 10-years $700 million
Don't like the Yankees for Snell at all. Feels like he'd spend half his contract on the IL

Phillies get Snell confirmed.
10 years / $100,000,000 but it's only a 30 cent cap hit each year and they will owe $99,999,997 after the 10 years completes.

I was so happy to see Kimbrel leave. Now Baltimore fans can attempt to convince themselves he's still good as he throws wild pitch after wild pitch 3 feet to the catchers right side...
Re: MLB Hot Stove: Ohtani signs 10-years $700 million
Probably luxury tax implications. Philly will be over for year 3 and signing Hader may get them to the 40 million over additional penalty. They are about 18 million over the tax and Hader is looking for about 22 million a year.PhutureDynasty wrote: ↑Fri Jan 05, 2024 12:38 pmI don't know why either. Right now their tax bill is about 9 million
Signing hader would bring it to approx 42.5 million.
So your not signing hader for 22 million a year, you are signing him for essentially 55 million a year.
Lots of cheese for a closer. Unless Hader is willing to pull an Ohtani

One thing I pay little attention to is how the salary cap works in baseball. I understand that there's a threshold that if you pass you pay a premium on each dollar over but that's essentially the extent of my knowledge.
As frustrating as seeing the Ohtani contract was (especially given it's an NL contender), I gotta say I respect the move by LAD. If it's within the rules then do it. Let them change the rules afterwards if they need to.
I wish we did the same thing with our signings (assuming the player is OK with it too).

It’s explained more in detail here if interested. Surpsingly straight forward

Re: MLB Hot Stove: Ohtani signs 10-years $700 million
Actually my math was a bit off. Think it would actually bring the tax bill to only 28.5 million.
40 million over at 50% = 20 million
40 million 42.5% surcharge penalty = 28.5
So not as bad but still a good chunk for a closer

The best strategy is to create an environment where some of the games best young stars sign for a huge discount, allowing to continue to being in talent and stay relevant for many years...
As we are seeing first hand, watching a team throw endless money out there with no plan or ability to run an organization breeds the largest payroll BY FAR in history, only to finish 29 games out of 1st place...

Oh, and the mantra of, "wait til next year" from said ballclub is moot as well, as we know said team will be complete dog shit next year too...
Maybe the new saying will be..."wait til next decade..."

He would be Rodon 2.0 for the Yankees

Too bad for them that they basically lit piles of money on fire with what they gave to Castellanos and Taiwan Walker. And Schwarber low key kind of sucks too. So for everyone praising the Phillies for spending money the 'right way' they got plenty wrong.

He was good after adding a sweeper but now he's a 4/5 miscast as a 3/4

Daddy Cohen’s money hard at work…if this keeps up, the Mets might be in 3rd place next season…kobeunderbite wrote: ↑Sun Jan 07, 2024 1:04 pm

I don't see why they didn't bring back JD if they were going to 23m
