The fact that they pulled this contract chicanery off and are able to also afford other players too is a bit insane.
I say that as a person who is equal parts pissed because I don't like LAD and equal parts jealousy because I'm mad that we did not do this any of our previous FA signings.
I wonder if the MLB bans this type of money maneuvering going forward; with the Ohtani contract and others already completed being grandfathered in as exempt from said rule.

Yea there's no chance every team isn't trying to do this with every big FA moving forward. Whether the player wants to do it is another question.Titan18 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 13, 2023 11:59 amThey will once Cohen does it with Soto next winter.PhutureDynasty wrote: ↑Wed Dec 13, 2023 11:05 am The fact that they pulled this contract chicanery off and are able to also afford other players too is a bit insane.

It's irresponsible not to try though given it seems like a huge advantage.
Although I must admit I don't entirely understand how it works for the Dodgers cap space after Ohtani's 10 years ends with them.

There is 0 luxury tax cap hit for the dodgers after the 10 years is up.PhutureDynasty wrote: ↑Wed Dec 13, 2023 1:49 pmYea there's no chance every team isn't trying to do this with every big FA moving forward. Re: MLB Hot Stove: Ohtani signs 7-years $700 million
Really? I was thinking it might be $24m per year roughly during those next ten years. 70m less the 46m hit during the first ten years. It seems like it would need to add up to the full 700m once all done, but I am just guessingTitan18 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 13, 2023 4:22 pmThere is 0 luxury tax cap hit for the dodgers after the 10 years is up.PhutureDynasty wrote: ↑Wed Dec 13, 2023 1:49 pmYea there's no chance every team isn't trying to do this with every big FA moving forward. I think it’s bigger than baseball. Every team, in every capped sport will be trying this.PhutureDynasty wrote: ↑Wed Dec 13, 2023 1:49 pmYea there's no chance every team isn't trying to do this with every big FA moving forward. I expect most leagues to be proactive in changing the lettering of their contract rules to disallow this.

Re: MLB Hot Stove: Ohtani signs 10-years $700 million
Why didn't he just sign for 10/600 straight up. He would have come out much farther ahead even with the CA tax if he were to invest the money even conservatively. How big of a deal is it to save the Dodgers $14m per year against their cap? By the next CBA the tax thresholds will all move up again anyways.
Re: MLB Hot Stove: Ohtani signs 10-years $700 million
One thing that doesn’t make sense also is why deferred money lowers the today market value of a contract for luxury tax purposes but general long term contracts don’t.
Dodgers are getting luxury tax relief because the 68 million they are paying Ohtani beyond 2034 is worth less than today. Yet the 26 million the Phillies are paying Harper in 2031 is worth less than it is today but there is no adjustment.

Re: MLB Hot Stove: Ohtani signs 7-years $700 million
It is correct. Deferments aren’t new. It’s just that no player or team went to the extreme that the Dodgers and Ohtani did. Luxury tax is only for the duration of the contract. Hence why other deferments, like max scherzer arent being counted towards the luxury tax for the nationals despite him being currently paid 15 million a year from them.
