So he's gonna Bobby Bonilla the deal?
WTF kinda chicanery is this?
Dodgers just got Ohtani at 10/20 million so they can load up.
Wow.

That’s insane. That sort of blatant luxury tax manipulation has to be against the rules. MLB and the union will have to step in to fix this this.

Re: Ohtani signs with Dodgers, 10 years $700 million
Who is advising him to wait 10 years to get 95% of his money? I can't imagine anybody ever being dumb enough to agree to that deal. So nobody gets paid for another 10 years (agents, managers, etc.) Isn't money always worth less as time goes on due to inflation? And then on top of it he can't even invest it now and make money for the next 10 years...lose all that compound interest? I'm no financial expert, but this sounds like a terrible deal for anyone other than the Dodgers.

Short term it's great for dodgers. Isn't their window basically closed for 10 years after that though?manchild98 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 11, 2023 8:50 pm Who is advising him to wait 10 years to get 95% of his money? Really seems like a financially illiterate deal for Ohtani though.

Maybe he's actually a genius. He can move away from Commifornia and not pay those taxes. Move to a tax friendly state, or Dubai, Japan, etc, when the contracts up.

Is the taxable income rate based on where the money is coming from (Los Angeles) or the current residence of the recipient (wherever he moves to)?AlaskaHawks wrote: ↑Mon Dec 11, 2023 11:36 pm Maybe he's actually a genius. Re: Ohtani signs with Dodgers, 10 years $700 million
If Steve Cohen did this first, MLB owners and fans would freak out like we've never seen and the deal would end up getting vetoed. They created a whole new Steve Cohen tax just because he signed Starling Marte and Max Scherzer, they would never allow him to pull this.
Re: Ohtani signs with Dodgers, 10 years $700 million
Exactly, which is why it will be a blessing for the Mets that the mlb darlings Dodgers did it first. Precedent is now set so Steve has 3 years to broker similar deals before they close this loophole during the next negotiations in 2026.kobeunderbite wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 12:18 pm

It's unfortunate that this market is such trash other than Yamamoto or he could do it now. Unfortunately the Dodgers will probably sign Yamamoto and we will end up overpaying for Snell or Montgomery. Next winter the Mets only have $118m on the books, $150 if Pete is extended. Leaves a nice $150m-$250m to play with.
