Okay so I haven’t really followed the situation too closely but what was hamas end game here? Did they really think that Israel wasn’t going to turn Gaza into dust after they pulled what they did? I get they don’t give a shit about the citizens but what exactly are they trying to accomplish?

Either they didn't expect their operation to be as successful as it was (that they would meet more IDF resistance, thus not end up killing and kidnapping nearly as many people, which plays into the theory that Israel allowed it to happen on some level to provide a means to permanently end Hamas) or they received certain assurances from Iran that it is now looking like Iran will not make good on.
