I would say that if there really are 3-5 or even 10+ American hostages, America would need to be compelled to even get hands on, as opposed to just allowing Israel to light up Gaza. That basically loses Biden the election if there are still American hostages in Gaza around that time, which is a distinct possibility given Hamas' track record of keeping hostages for years on end until they get what they want in prisoner exchanges.
