The East has 6 teams that are .500 or better right now.

Now I'm not saying the east is any good at all but this isn't out of the ordinary. Contrary to popular belief the 80's had some weak ass teams as well. Hell, even Jordan's 1st 3 years in the league the Bulls made the playoffs with records of 38-44 (7 seed), 30-52 (8 seed Jordan was hurt for a lot of the year) and 40-42 (8 seed).

East and West both had weak teams:

83-84: 4 teams make the playoffs with an under .500 record
84-85: 4 teams
85-86: 6 teams
86-87: 3 teams
87-88: 3 teams
88-89: 1 team


Just for random comparison, in the last 10 years the NBA has only had 1 year where more than 1 team with an under .500 record made the playoffs and the was 2007-2008...2 teams made it that year.
