Well, he's not really fat anymore, but he does suck.

Melo has a very cheap salary. He's shooting the three at 39% with Portland this year. When he's engaged, his defense is solid. He obviously has some game left that just needs to be guided in the right direction. If he was on the Lakers, a team with a true shot at the title and with his good buddy Lebron to motivate him, I don't see why he wouldn't have been a worthwhile gamble especially when he makes less than 2 million. He's played well on the USA basketball team surrounded by stars, it's an environment he seems to excel in. Is it better to have Dudley on the bench who is rarely used? Portland just got a good game out of Melo in the playoffs which is more than can be said for Dion, Dudley, and JR. As a GM, it would be a no brainer to give Melo a shot for almost no risk.

In situations where a lot is expected from Melo and he doesn't respect his teammates then he can be a cancer. If the situation is close to what he had with USA basketball then he excels. The Lakers are closer to the USA basketball situation. With such a low cost salary, he was worth the gamble. Look at Howard, the lakers were weary about him but he has turned out to be a solid citizen. A good GM can see these opportunities to grab a player with potential and little risk (low salary) and give him a chance.

Lebron is still a top 5 player in the league but he is no longer the best, thus the Lebron era is over.
