I've been saying that a debate (that may not even happen) between Trump and Biden would be off the charts terrible... and funny.

Neither guy is a good speaker. Both are really old guys in their 70s well past retirement age who seem to have lost their fastballs... and maybe even their change ups at this point, at least when speaking in public. Both struggle with coherency. Staying on point. Rambling. Nonsense. It would be a trainwreck in every way. I think it would scare every American that the choice somehow came down to these two.

With a decent candidate there would have been a real race but when the dust settled after South Carolina they just said F it and decided to at the very least stop Bernie at all costs even if that meant losing the general. Because Bernie as the nominee is far more of an existential threat to the democratic establishment than Biden. With Biden they still have a chance if Trump screws it up for himself and yeah they can claim they're hitting the reset button next time out anyway. Priority 1 was always stopping Bernie.

And this isn't the anomaly. Clinton is virtually the same age as Trump. Heck, Romney would have been considered "young" back in 2012 compared to this lot... and he'd still have been past retirement age.

Some people simply want a viable candidate for POTUS under retirement age... some of these guys are 10+ years beyond when the public sector tells them they've officially lost their fastballs and are no longer wanted.
