It didn't help having his youth years during Rodman's prime rebounding years.

The absolute most severe interpretation of Shaq would be "could have been the GOAT, but is only the 10th best player ever".

Dwight is going to be a HOFer, and was a rebounding/defensive stud for many years, even though his offensive game more or less stayed in infancy.

No one who is a HOFer can possibly top this list. Basketball simply has too many guys who have missed the boat entirely. Derick Coleman was mentioned earlier...and he actually had a long career and made an all-star game. Some of these guys are starting from a high place and then dropping out of the NBA entirely or getting booted for drugs (like a Chris Washburn or Roy Tarpley).

Regarding Shaq's rebounding, he grabbed about 18 percent of all possible rebounds during his Orlando and LA years.

He probably would have been inside the top 25 all-time if he didn't hang around far past his prime:

There's very little question that the talent is there. The on court results are so far removed from the potential that it's ridiculous. And I doubt that ever changes.

Maybe, but I'm not convinced. He wanted to be the guy too much without the ability to deliver. He was made for the Chinese League so it all worked out in the end.

I hate the guy so not defending him by any means, other than defending the claim his career was an epic waste

Very late here, but Lamar Odom is my pick. He had phenomenal talent, very agile for his size, could've been a top talent. Instead he became a druggie and married a Kardashian.
