I'm a bit perturbed because I thought there wouldn't be any trash pickup today, so I didn't put it out on the curb.

I remember when a majority of Arizonans rejected the bill to make it a holiday in the early 90s, and the NFL yanking the Super Bowl from Tempe in '93.

Not directly, no. The song & Do The Right Thing both came out in '89, right around the time AZ voted (and rejected) to get MLK Day recognized.
