The bride and groom-to-be go to places like Macy's, Restoration Hardware, Bed Bath & Beyond, whatever you fancy, and you "create" a registry, which is a wish list of items you would like to receive. Said list is online and can be accessed by searching names under registries. When you send out invites or save the dates for the wedding, you include a list that says "registered at...."
Then your guests can go online or in store, pull up your registry of those items you have selected for purchase (typically linens, kitchenware, home décor, whatever) and they can buy them for you for your wedding. Takes the guesswork out of figuring out what to get the couple?
