What is your opportunity cost? (Current earnings)
What type of stipends are available for PhD programs in your field at realistic institutions you might attend?
What type of upside in future earnings does this provide?
What type of impact does this have on the general utility of your life (ie do you enjoy an academic vs professional setting? Would you enjoy a future career more than current excluding earnings difference?)
....if I already had a masters in my chosen field (economics) and a PhD was an easy option to enroll, I’d absolutely do it. Or at least I would’ve a few years back when I considered it, before current earnings increased enough to make it a more difficult economic (no pun intended) decision.
