Even though I've been on the immigration/culture-change through demographic change train for a very long time (well before it became a popular topic), I've often wondered what my life would have been like if I had been born into a typical Central-American or Haitian situation rather than a typical (if complicated) American situation.

Those people are victimized by institutions (chiefly, government) even more than the average America.

What would I do if I was in that situation?

I think when you consider it that way, you can muster up some empathy (at least for the relatively peaceful, non-violent ones) even if you are seriously anti-immigration.

I would say that most anyone isn't "anti-immigration".....simply anti-ILLEGAL immigration.

I have absolutely no problem with people looking to emigrate to the US legally. It's the "illegal" part that bothers me....and how anyone can support someone's illegal actions so vehemently.

I wouldn’t say I’m anti-immigration, but I’m anti-illegal immigration, opposed to amnesty, and am for reducing legal immigration to its historic norms. These were never controversial positions, until 2-3 years ago. It’s a big part of why many former democrats continue to leave the party - because they’ve moved so far left on the issue.

The biggest issue, is it’s never ‘just’ children. They’re thrown in as a convenient wedge. People know if you mention children, it’ll evoke emotional responses. When one side treats a policy debate as a moral test, they’re admitting they don’t have an actual argument. This has happened, multiple times in history if you study immigration legislation. First it’s the ‘kids’ who are allowed to stay. Then it’s ‘we need to reunite families!’ and their parents and siblings are here. Next, chain migration kicks in, and before you know it, each ‘kid’ brings a ten person family. The democrats support this - because it’ll get them votes - so spare me the moral nonsense. Reagan granted mass amnesty, and the new citizens voted 75-25 democrats in the next election.

Would comment more, but much of the thread has devolved to classist diatribe. I care a ton more about the working poor and lower middle class here than people hopping the fence or overstaying visas. (Keep in mind, that of those here who were seeking amnesty, if you DON’T hop the fence, and enter at one of the actual entry points we have for that purpose, and wait your turn behind those who got there first, you are not put in a detention facility).

A) Feeling empathy for certain types of illegal immigrants (children or otherwise)

At least they know where their parents are... And they get to visit them.
