and if you actually watched any laker games ( @FPL can back me up on this ) .. during those years kobe played decoy during 1st quarters and if the lakers were losing big he'd turn it on and try and shoot them back into games. which would trick people into thinking the lakers lost cause of kobes chucking.

its a different mentality/presence that strikes fear into opponents. they "never let you off the hook" as jim jackson would say

Skill and "Alpha" and "top dog" and "kill you with a stare", "could will his team to win (while apparently turning off this will for whatever reason for 25+ games in the regular season and playoffs)" or whatever buzzwords/phrases you want to use are only meaningful to the extent they impact changes in PERFORMANCE.

Bird had an ultra competitive attitude. Hardest worker ever (or close). One of the best teammates ever. And so on...

Yep! And we all know that NBA never hold their era or the players they played against more dear than players from other eras!

ofcourse. i said they use the "i played him" test. so obviously they can only speak on who they played against. but a majority opinion used based on hundreds of guys from a certain era could be used to formulate a "player of the decade/era" at the very least


most players say wilt was the best individual player from the 60's

most players say kareem was the best individual player from the 70's

most players say magic was the best individual player from the 80's

most players say jordan was the best individual player from the 90's

most players say kobe was the best individual player from the 00's

most players say lebron was the best individual player from the 2010's



after that its all subjective/relative to the opinions of guys that played in multiple eras


we can deduce that kobe is better than lebron because more people that played in both eras respect him

we can also figure out that jordan is above kobe based on their competitions opinions

jordan above magic. and magic above kareem ... so its almost like a pyramid ranking formula rather than a singular list

kobe and magic would equally share the #2 spot. and lebron/kareem would equally represent the #3 spot

When you get right down to it, Lebron performs better (apples to apples) because he won the genetic lottery in every conceivable way and Bird won it in only a few ways.

Lebron being more athletic than Bird is the crux of virtually everything that helps Lebron perform better than Bird.

For example, getting way more easy shots at the rime. Getting more FTs. Not having to settle for midrange shots against tough defenses in the playoffs. Having the athletic ability to move laterally quickly and close distance more quickly, etc...
